View Full Version : Orange wire on brake pedal swith???
Erik Beckett Jan 9th, 02, 08:14 AM There are two wires on the brake pedal assembly, the white plastic plunger thing, I don't know the exact name of it. But, the orange wire has been cut and the person who owned the car before me ran it straight into the fuse box. What is this wire for? I can see the rest of the orange wire that he cut. Should I just connect the two and see what happens or what? Thanks, Erik Beckett

John_Muha Jan 9th, 02, 10:49 AM The white plunger thing is the brake switch. Makes the brake lights come on. The orange wire originally came from the brake fuse to the switch. Provides the 12 volts to the rear brake lights.
I venture a guess that if you measure the cut orange wire, to a good ground, you will not see 12 volts on it. What happened is the last guy could not get the brake lights to work and "fixed" it by finding another 12 volt source. Either the original orange wire is not making a good connection behind the fuse block or the brake fuse clip is badly rusted. Can't tell from here. Not too bad of a fix. Guessing he picked up a fused BAT terminal. Just make sure the brake lights come on when the key is off. Otherwise he picked up an IGN terminal and that's not quite legal.
Erik Beckett Jan 9th, 02, 11:05 AM Thanks for the response. I just started to go through the wiring under the dash, since winter is here in Ohio, its a good time for this stuff. I was under the dash ripping out the aftermarket guages and trying to find a place to mount my MSD box and I saw this a it looked strange. I have about 8 wires going right to the fuse box that I want to clean up. Thanks, Erik

mccorry Jan 9th, 02, 05:21 PM Hey Eric, you have a "rat's nest" of wires like I do? I still need to check out your car!
Did you ever get the 12-bolt set up?

Yep it's winter. Only 75 during the day in Southern California. Heavy surf off the coast.
Free post for me.
Erik Beckett Jan 10th, 02, 02:49 AM Steve, I have the 12 bolt, I was just waiting till after the holidays to start the major work on the car. I have to have the gears installed and I'm hoping all the brakes will be a direct fit from the current 10 bolt to the 12 bolt. The wires under the dash aren't that bad, but I don't know where to mount my MSD Box. I was told by a pretty reputable shop in Pataskala not to mount it in the engine compartment and I don't think the glove box is big enough. I thought somebody told me you were moving out of state. Later, Erik Beckett

mccorry Jan 19th, 02, 04:42 AM Nah...I'm still here. The move fell through.
My buddy mounted his MSD box up near the battery, in front of the wheelwell...
