I would like to change my 69's externally regulated alternator to a internally regulated one. I am doing this to try and clean up the engine compartment while the front is dissasembled for the winter. Any suggestions on how to do this, what alternator should I use, and how to remove the regulator from the harness without making it look hack?

Just did this conversion this summer and was an easy swap. You should have two wires that go to and from the alternator/voltage regulator. Mine were white and blue. Get rid of em! Then you have a large 10 gauge that meets with 2 other 10 gauges (red?) Clip the one that goes to the voltage regulator, and tape all of that up good. One of the three 10 gauges already runs to the alternator. The last 10 gauge goes to the horn relay. All of these meet together and go to the battery and or junction block. From there, you should have one wire to deal with. Mine was a brown one. I Capped mine off because I went with a set of gauges and I believe that wire is to your idiot light in the dash. I also went with a 100 amp alternator, and everything works great! Good luck!

Just a thought...since your front end is "disassembled for the winter", what kind of shape is your wiring harness in? After over 30 years mine had been hacked and cobbled by previous owners, there were incorrect terminals, corrosion, melted insulation...all of it worked, but it had seen better days.
When my engine was out I took that opportunity to run new engine and front light harnesses. I ordered them from M & H Electrical Fabricators, and they built a new harness for me with all the right color wires, terminals, securing points, etc. but modified it to use an internal voltage regulator alternator. Looks clean, fits right, works great. Per their suggestion I'm running an alternator from a mid 70s Pickup Truck w/air conditioning. I don't know what amperage that is but apparently it's a stock (read that inexpensive) heavy duty alternator. They would have modified it for an HEI distributor too, but I wasn't sure if I was going to go back to a stock looking distributor and put electronic internals or not.
Again, it's just a thought.

Thanks, the harness is in excellant shape, no previous hackers here, but I like the idea of a new harness so it looks original do you have the phone number or any information for M&H fabricators? The help is appreciated.

I also believe this site's sponsor Ground Up Restorations carries M & H harnesses, so that might be worth taking a look at too. Good luck.
