: wiper and heater only work before start

I have a 68 plane jane and have just cleaned up the dash harness glass beading all terminals because of rust and have run into a strange problem. If I start the car first and then use the wipers or the heater the generator light comes on,BUT if I turn on the wipers or heater FIRST everything works normally. Any Ideas?

On a side note lately only the marker and parking lights are working consistantly. The headlights will only come on after hitting a bump and only sometimes at that. Any ideas? and do the lights get power from the relay or straight from the switch? I don't have any schematics to go off of.
Thanks, Jeff

Jeff, welcome to the site, lots of great (smart) people here, I'm not one of them, but I would check your grounds, If you had rust in the terminals, you will probably have rust at the grounds. Also sometimes moving stuff around under the dash sometimes loosens up something, I'm sure you did this already, but double check everthing again...good luck. Mike

(Just thinking out loud. Sounds like a missing ground affecting the regulator.)
First see it you have a good ground from battery (-) to the right inside fender. This is the ground line for both the regulator and the front lights.
Next start the car, with the wipers and heater off, and measure the alternator blue wire to ground. Expected value is around 13 volts.
Next turn the wipers and heater blower on. Watch the GEN light come on. This time measure the blue wire to ground and then measure the large red wire to ground. Both should measure around 13/14 volts.
Maybe this will give a hint of what is happening.
