The single wire alternator uses no voltage regulator its used for racing aplications all you have to do is supply a 12 volts to the terminal. This is not a good idea for street use for the output of the alternator is low and the voltage can't be regulated.

The single wire alt has no regulater??!!I'm 99.99% sure it does!!!I don't have a single wire alt but believe the one wire alts are 'self excited'internally regulated and the engine needs to be 'reved' a few thousand rpms to get them to start charging.

sschevyfan is correct.
I've been using them on mine and putting them on customer's cars for a few years now.
One word of caution though...I've had 2 of the regulators fail, started charging at 18+ volts, and "smoked" the alternator and boiled the battery.

There is also information on this swap in the Team Camaro Technical Referance section.

I use the 105 amp CS series alternator from an early 1990's Chevy pickup. It has worked fine so far. There are pictures of this swap on my website.

I have put tons on one-wires on all kinds of applications and they are perfect for the street.

I use either the Powermaster series or TuffStuff alts. They are quality stuff and will take up to 20K shaft speeds and high bearing loads. We use them both on our serpentine conversion kits.

Don't know if your interested but M&H electric fabricators sell a conversion harness for external to internal for $15 plugs into voltage regulator harness and on to convert old plug to newer style

Hey Travis, I bought one of those connectors that Racecam2 was talking about and I have had no problem with it. I put a new CS style (105 amp) from a 88-92 camaro on my 68 and it works great. Read the tech article on this web page about it. Another reason I like this type of conversion is that if you are on the road somewhere and loose an alternator, just go to the local parts store and get the CS style alternator. Other wise, you have to mail order it from summit or jegs and have to wait several days. I hope this helps.

one wire alternators lack longevity then? I would like to clean up my engine compartment

130fe,

Hey, I just called M&H and the guy told me the $15 adpater only works with the SI alternator and will not work with the CS style. Does your warning lights still work as well? I had rather have the CS than the SI.

Thanks,

Does anyone know how to contact M&H to purchase the conversion kit for externally regulated alternators to the one wire version?

Travis, sorry I gave you the wrong company. I got my conversion kit from www.americanautowire.com (http://www.americanautowire.com) . I bought the ext volt reg to CS conversion kit #37787 $15.50. Their phone # is 1-800-482-9473. I do not know about the Alt light (I have an all autometer set up and use a voltmeter). You can give their tech line a call about the light and the 1 wire conversion, they gave me some good info when I needed it. I hope this helps you.
