on a 68, Where is the darned thing and what color wire is running to it? I have studied (at length) the other postings on this board about how to determine what is wrong (unit or gauge). I plan to tackle this as soon as I figure out where to begin. According to my manual it is tan, but I can't find a tan wire.

Brad,
The sending unit wire is in the trunk. Look just in front of the filler neck and you will see a connector that comes off the tailight wiring harness. One wire goes to the license plate lamp and the other goes through the trunk floor to the top of the tank where the sending unit is. I believe the 68 is the same as mine and the wire is tan.

Mike,
I recently helped a friend rewire his '68, and the sending unit wire was indeed tan, as in our '67s.
You can also break out this wire at the "rear body harness" connector above (inside) the driver's side kick panel.
I also found in my '67 and my friend's '68, that the sending unit wire has some serious chaffing from rubbing against the metal fuel neck "cover" tabs in the trunk. Something to check to make sure it doesn't ground out.

Thanks for the info guys. My fuel gauge reads 125% all the time no matter how much gas is in it. I just got a couple new Autometer gauges to do the 5" speedo/tach, and 4 gauge combo in the console thing. I ned to troubleshoot the fuel gauge first though.
Thanks again

125% reading would indicate an open circuit (dirty contacts or no ground). That is where you may want to look first....
The sending unit grounds to one of the trunk floor supports....
