Thanks for the help on the GEN light. I still don't have the problem solved. I have done the following:

1) replaced the alternator
2) replaced the regulator
3) checked all my connections between the battery, regulator, alternator and starter.
4) I charged the battery to 13.7 volts, then put the new alternator on.
5) with the motor off and the ignition on, I get 3.7 volts to the first terminal on the regulator, 5.7 to the 2nd, 13.7 to the third and 5.7 to the fourth, is this ok?

What is the next step to finding the problem? I don't want to drive my car anywhere for fear of getting stuck.

Did you check and recheck all your grounds including the instrument cluster ground? Also make sure all the ground mounting surfaces are clean.

Do you have a wiring schematic? One of my books on camaros does, but I'm not at a point where I can look for you. I sounds like you have a wire crossed somewhere. All the "GEN" light does is excites the alternator circuit telling the alternator it's okay to re-produce electricity. Somehow the alternator is not "seeing" this light. I'd find a schematic & start tracing.

I decided this morning to double/triple check everything that I had gone over. It turns out that it was a bad regulator, I did not the new one grounded when I put it on the first time. I was trying to save time by just pluging it in, I did not put the condensor on the first time, which has the ground strap attached to it. A classic example of doing it wrong the first time and having to spend many hours trying to correct something that should have been taken care of 20 hours ago. Learn from my mistake.... I really appreciate all the help that everyone offered.

Glad to hear ya got it fixed , Rick. I know I've done the same thing before and Unfortunately I'm Sure I'll do it again. I remember having a loose condenser screw in the distributor that caused a random miss undera load. Drove me freakin NUTZ. Have a good one-Dan in WV
