Need some help, I changed the 2-wire connector on my alternator and accidently swapped the pins. Before I had found out what I did wrong, the car wouldn't start at the local market (bad scene, nice car, people ogling, wouldn't start.) Serves me right. Anyway after I got a jump, I parked her and she wouldn't turn over. My question is, did I fry the voltage regulator? What effect does this have on the alternator? I'm going to take voltqge readings tomorrow once she is charged and will start. Suggestions? Thanks in advance.

Took readings and saw 18 volts from the alt. to GRD and also across the battery. Noticed the regulator was hot, replaced now voltage seems to be good at 13 volts. Can someone tell me the electrical path and hoew much volts the alternator should put out? Thanks

The voltage regulator should produce around 14.5 volts back to the battery. There isn't an amount the alternator produces per say. The voltage regulator will adjust the total output to the 14.5 volts. Sounds like the gap in the voltage regulator went, which might have been caused by the swapping of the field wires in the alternator. I'm not sure what happens if the field wires are swapped. I've had a one-wire alternator on my car for 5-6 months now with great results.

I looked in the service manual, and it says if the regulator is producing 13.5 to 15.2 volts than it's okay. Do you have a service manual? The test and adjustment procedures are a bit lengthy.

hope this helps.
