My 69RS/Z28 speedometer needle recently started to jump around when driving and now it stopped working completely. Is there a loose connection somewhere or is it a speedo cable lubrication problem ?

Sounds like the cable broke, reach under the dash and disconnect the cable from the speedo head, pull the inside cable out, chances are you will find it broken, an easier way is pull the cable off at the transmission if the cable is broken you will be able to pull the broken piece out, if you can't pull it out then the problem will be in the adapter and gears.
Lubricate the cable with a light grease after replacement.

Rob is right, sounds like the cable, but if you pull it out from the inside, watch out because the existing grease on the cable will get everywhere. Also when you buy the replacement cable, ask for some spedo cable lube that is made for cables. I think you can get it from NAPA
