View Full Version : Those fuseable links... what can replace them?
click Mar 13th, 05, 03:14 PM Im detailing the wiring up front and find alot of those fuseable link couplings are loose on one end or wiggly, making me wonder if they are close to breaking. What can susbstitute for them? An inline fuse or do they make those inline links, Ive not seen any like it. All 4 of mine are questionable so now is the time to spiff them up. Any ideas?
I cant take a pic, wife took my digital to visit relatives. :(
Found this when I did a search, should have done that first. For future searches this is one option.
Mad electrical fuseable links (http://www.madelectrical.com/catalog/fusible-link.shtml)
JimM Mar 13th, 05, 04:49 PM Those mad electrical links look like they would work great, just don't look factory. Far as I know the only way to get a factory look would be to replace the whole harness, seems kinda prohibitive unless there's other problems. If it's just those big black insulator's a little wiggly might not be a problem.
DTB Mar 13th, 05, 06:04 PM I've bought bulk fusible link in black at local auto electric stores. It came in a package like fishing line leader and you just cut what you need and solder it in. You must get the proper gauge for your application. T
HwyStarJoe Mar 14th, 05, 11:17 AM If they're loose or wiggly, corrosion is getting inside them. Sooner or later they'll fail.
I know junkyards aren't the most fun place to hang out, but grab a bunch of them from harnesses that are the same gauge. Twist and wiggle them to see how tight they are. Get as much of the wire as you can, then trim the length to fit. Buy some heat shrink tubing of the same color, solder them in and shrink tube the soldered joints. They'll practically be invisable. The only thing I'd wonder about is if they're rated the same as the fuseable links on a '69 harness.
18436572 Mar 14th, 05, 02:06 PM Just remember the rule for fusible links when replacing them.
The fusible link should be 2 wire gauge sizes SMALLER than the wire they are protecting.
Example: A 10 gauge wire should be protected with a 14 gauge fusible link.
Midlife Cruiser Mar 14th, 05, 02:47 PM Hey Click, Speaking of fusible links, I installed the ones from those headlight relays we ordered. I installed the kits this weekend. They work quite well. The headlights are noticably brighter. Have you installed your kits yet?
dawg Mar 18th, 05, 09:04 AM I replace all my fuseable links with aircraft circuit breakers and mounted them on a neat aluminum panel.
So instead of replacing the link all I do is reset the breaker

click Mar 18th, 05, 10:12 AM Nope John, still in the bag, my front end is totally apart , just engine showing and fenders, Im sitting on a stool washing, degreasing and derusting the frame I can reach, then will touch up with black paint and then new vac hoses and cleaned up wire harness, then put it all back together.
call ahead when coming to town, you can see the mess smile.gif
Midlife Cruiser Mar 21st, 05, 05:40 PM Ahh, sounds like car guy heaven! I remember it well. Hope your enjoying it. There's no place I'd rather be than in the shop working on my muscle cars. OK OK...Hawaii, Mexico, the golf course, are all good, but not better. Will definitely call next time I head for Brainerd, can't wait to see it.
click Mar 25th, 05, 12:45 PM Just a note, the madelectrical site says 4 size difference in wire to fuseable wire size. I finally got around to reading it again.

JimM Sep 14th, 05, 04:37 AM Click, had occaision to blow a fusible link yesterday, forgot to disconnect the bat when working on the electrical system, ooops. What did you end up with, and how 'bout a pic?
click Sep 14th, 05, 02:28 PM I was in Mpls Tue. and Wed. so didnt have much time or access to my photos on my laptop.
Not a very good photo but I got new fuseable links at local auto parts store. They are different and wont win points in a judged show but when wrapped in tape they dont show much anyway. I made sure the original colored wires coming out of the regulator were visible, then spliced in the 'link' then wrapped with tape for the finished look. If you need a more close up pic let me know, I can shoot one tonight.
Here is shot I took awhile ago.
