View Full Version : Water Temp Sending unit for Autometer Gauge
Go69 Apr 19th, 02, 07:29 AM Hello all, I have an Autometer Electrical Water temperature gauge that I would like to install. My question is, what sending unit do I need? Can I use the factory GM sending unit with this gauge? The gauge was given to me so it did not come with the sending unit. Any help would be most appreciated. Thanks in advance.

DjD Apr 19th, 02, 08:00 AM The sender is different... You might contact Auto Meter and have them sell you the right sender...

Wes V Apr 19th, 02, 01:41 PM Autometer is real good about helping.
I had to get an "extra" temp sender so that I could mount one in the automatic transmission pan. (a switch selects if I'm looking at the water temp or transmission temp sending unit)
There is one problem that you should discuss with them however!! It seems that they changed the "range" of the temp sending units a couple years ago. Keep in mind that the sending unit has to match the gauge or it will not read correct. Bring up the subject with them. They should be able to get some form of ID number off the gauge so that you get the correct sender.
If they can't do that, ask for both versions of the sending unit. They don't cost that much. The difference in gauge reading is very noticable if you put in the wrong sending unit (but will not damage the gauge).
Been there, Done that.

Go69 Apr 22nd, 02, 05:12 AM Thanks guys for the replies! I called Auto-meter directly and talked to one of their reps. I was told that they have it, but that they can't sell it to me. :-( I was told that I have to go through one of their vendors. Wes you are correct in that there are two different sending units for the gauges and 1995 seems to be the year that they changed. You either have the 1995 and older (which I do!), which takes one unit, or the 1996 and newer which takes another. Does anyone have a suggestion about how I get my local Auto-Zone to order one for me? I was told that they can order the part by the Auto-Meter rep but when I called Dork-Zone, they acted like I was a resident at a crack house. All they kept asking me was what year/make/model car I drive... I explained-AUTO-METER-non-factory part.. But all common sense and logic was lost (on two separate employees no less!) and I was told that they don't carry/sell Auto-Meter.. I even have the part number and they still could not find it.. Napa, here I come!

ORENCH Apr 22nd, 02, 07:06 AM Try the same with Summit or Fire wheels Classic. Both have helpfull personnel and carry Autometer brand.

Glad you were able to score one locally.
I find working with local parts stores to be a real chore when dealing with aftermarket parts or when dealing with replacement parts for a car that is 34 years old. I was looking for a rebuild kit for my Edelbrock carb a couple of months ago and the local AutoZone acted like I was from Area 51 even though they were suppose to be a reseller.

Codi Apr 25th, 02, 08:33 AM Go69... I work at "Dork-Zone part time, and you are partially correct in your assessment of "some" employees. I earn money at the Zone for my toy. One problem I have always had at the Zone is the corporate ability to sell sh*& and never, I mean never, let us know. I never knew we carried AutoMeter until I saw an Autogage tach on the shelf. When I was finished with customers (telling them what "I" thought was not working properly in their cars), I found the AutoMeter catalog in a pile of other catalogs, hence, the revelation. In defense of employees who do have an idea of what they are doing, and to agree with you on employees that have reached their skill level buffing floors, the Zone is famous for selling "some" items from a vendor and not being able to get others. It has happened to me to many times. I can order you one thing from Holley, Edelbrock, etc. But I cannot order the "kit" or parts, because the Zone order screen tells us it is "not yet available from Autozone". This bites and I lost (1) a sale and (2) I just pis@#$& someone off, who won't be back. Also, the Zone is not famous for "speed shop knowledge". I've been at my store for 7 years. I live, eat, breath hot rods. The others in the store send those looking for aftermarket performance items to me. I have met your first dork. I had to work with him. I have also met the person who found what you wanted. They are everywhere. I am upset the dork was of little help and happy another "Zoner" found what you wanted. As in any other profession or business, when you find someone you trust and is knowlegable (sic), stick with them.
