In the process of putting my '68 convert. together I noticed my fuel gauge is really whacky. With about 3 gallons of gas in for the initial startup the needle is registering
way off to the right clean off the gauge. Do I need replace the float in the tank(hope not), or is it in the sending unit in the gauge itself? Any help greatly appreciated,
I'm not looking forward to dropping the tank.Thanks

Probably a dead spot in the sending unit...where the winding is dirty/worn...

Try unplugging the lead in the trunk in the center of your harness, this should allow your needle to return to E, if not your wires are not in order.

Not true....an open circuit (ie - unplugging the harness in the trunk)...will act like FULL resistance and will send the needle to the far right (over Full).

If you unplug the connector and jump the sending wire (from the gauge)to ground...(No resistance) it should go to E.

Does the guage register the same no matter what the amount of gas in the tank is? If that's the case, it could be the sending unit gone bad, or it could be the guage cluster ground. THis is the problem I had inmy 67. The guage did the same thing......took the guage cluster out and noticed that the guage cluster's ground wire is attached to the cluster mounting screw above the bright lights indicator in the center. My ground wire was not hooked aroung the mounting screw and was not making a good ground with the dash. I put the screw through the wire, and voila! Fixed! So, take your guage cluster out and check the ground wire....it's not hard to do. If you have problems, or questions, email me at justin.traunero@furman.edu

One thing to remember the tank has to be grounded for the gauge to work, if you under coated your tank and put the felt paper back on top you will not get a ground connection and the gauge will read open (over full), Do not rely on the straps for an adaquate ground. Use a jump wire to test have some one watch the gauge as you jump the tank to a clean ground.
