Just bought a new air compressor 220v. I think I hook my house wires, one red and one black to the two connections on the motor. I hook up the ground and ignore the neutral wire. Is this correct?

You need two 120 volt wires to hook up the compressor motor. They should be connected to the two motor contacts. You should also hook up the motor grounding wire to the house's grounding circuit or at a grounding source close to the compressor. Neutral wires are just another grounding source (check your fuse box and you will see they are hooked to the grounding bar just like the copper grounds)and may not be necessary for this 220v circuit.
Make sure you have the 220v house circuit properly fused (double pole breaker rated for at least whatever amperage the compressor draws). Might also be a good idea to put a proper cutoff switch at the compressor so you can shut it down quickly if need be.
Be very sure the circuit is dead (flip the breaker!) before you start working. I urge you to get a voltage testor and test the circuit to make absolutely sure it is dead before you start. Household voltage can kill or give you a very nasty shock so be extra careful!
Hope this helps and Good Luck (Again Be Careful!)
