Hi,
I replaced the motor in my car and changed from a stock starter to a mini starter. The stock starter had a terminal in the middle and two terminals one on each side. I marked the wires when it came off the starter as middle left and right(I know stop laughing) THe problem is the new starter has one terminal and a clip then a bottom terminal that already has a wire hooked to it. The starter is from east coast electric. I had four wires going to the starter and now dont know where they should go. THe only info I know is that two of the wires are red and black and the other two look like they are part of the wiring harness. The car has an alarm in it which I never used. How do I know which wire goes to what and what should and shouldnt be connected. I am not good with electrical stuff at all so a step by step process would be most appreciated. THanks in advance.

On a conventional starter there are 3 wireing points The BATT,SOL,RES. The battery term is the largeest connector loop. The "S" terminal is from the ignition switch (signal to crank)The other term"Res" provides power to the Ballast resistor or resistor wire in the ignition system during cranking on points type ignition systems. So if you had points before there would have been a wire there. If you updated ignition systems you do not need the ballast resistor wire Just make sure you have power to the coil with ign on as well as cranking. Your updated starter most likely has a large BATT stud and a smaller stud or spade terminal for the crank signal. Hook large to large and all the small wires to the small stud.

Milan told you to hook all the small wires to the small stud. If the wire that goes from the starter to the coil is still being used connecting it to the small stud on the mini starter will cause the engine to keep cranking after you let go of the key. On the stock harness it's usually a small yellow wire. The crank wire is usually a larger purple one. My advice is to eliminate the one going to the coil. A stock harness has a resistor wire that runs from the ignition switch to the coil +. This provides about 9 volts to the coil. While cranking the engine the battery voltage drops, this is where the yellow wire to the starter comes into play. On the stock starter, while cranking, this wire provides battery voltage directly to the coil. The car will usually start without the yellow wire. Disconnect it at the coil and tape it into the harness at both ends in case you need it later.

OK so if I connect all the wires to the small terminal how would I do that if it is a spade terminal? Do I splice all the wires together then crimp a spade terminal connector to it?

Hook the battery cable to the big terminal. Put a spade terminal on the purple wire and tape up the yellow wire.

I did it the same way as 1 2RUN. Hooked purple wire to spade and taped up yellow wire for later use.

ok I took a thorough look under the hood and under the dash. Here is what I found. I have a HEI NOT POINTS. I have a purple wire and another wire which is running next to it I cutback the tape and saw someone crimped a different color wire to it and there it was the yellow wire.I also have a black and a red wire which goes to a buttom under the dash which when the key is in the on position I need to push to start the car. So if I have processed the info you all gave me here is what I should do. Connect the purple wire(crank wire) and the black wire(one of the two that run to the button under the dash) to the spade terminal, tape up the yellow wire(resister wire to coil) since I dont need it with an HEI, and put the red wire(Other wire running to the button under the dash) and battery cable on the big post. Is this right? I really want to thank you guys on this one, I am not very good with electronics and really appreciate your guidance.

That sounds like it should work.
