View Full Version : How do you test an ignition coil? Mr. Farknocker Jan 4th, 02, 05:58 PM Does anyone know how to test an MSD Blaster 2 ignition coil to find out whether its gone bad? Rich Everett#2390 Jan 5th, 02, 05:02 AM Welcome to the club! Measure with an ohmmeter across the primary terminals and look for low ohmage, but noy zero ohms. One lead from terminal, the other lead to the case to see primary winding is not shorted to case. Go from high-tension terminal with one lead, the other lead to the Negative terminal. There should not be a short, but very high resistance, typically 10-20,000 ohms. Also, check center to ground to make sure there is no short to case. Finally, if the above steps check good, substite into a known good ignition system, and with a fully charged battery, hold the center coil wire with it plugged into the tower and the other end 1/4-1/2 inch away from ground. Crank the engine and check for a blue spark across the gap. If there is, then I say the coil is good. ------------------ Everett 68/350/PG/11.90/115mph |
