View Full Version : Hot Wires

While swapping out then testing a new Wiper motor on one of the 69's this weekend, I noticed that when the ignition was in the "on" position (engine off) the wire harness (group of 5-6 wires that are taped at the factory) that goes from the firewall, over the wiper motor to the coil, etc,..became very warm.

I didn't smell anything burning or melting but, again, it was hot enough to cause concern.

I deducted that it's the coil wiring that's heating up. On this car, I'm running a Pertronix 40,000v coil and Pertronix Ignitor (electronics that replace points and condensor).

Is my concern merited? If so, what could be the problem and cure?

Thanks in advance!

Sounds like your resistor wire is running warm. From what I've read, the Ignitor can run on less than 12 volts while the coil remains on the resistance wire. Pertronix has been saying to run a separate switched 12 volt line to the Ignitor. This should take some of the load off the resistance wire. Perhaps contact them directly. http://www.pertronix.com/
