View Full Version : Chevy truck owners
cambird68 Apr 9th, 03, 03:51 AM I recently recieved a letter from the Central office of Chevrole Asking if any one owns a 97 blazer,S10 pickup,94,95,96 or 97 C/K crew cab pickup, Tohoe or Suburban and are having trouble with your wiper motor. it stated that the wiper motor fails due to cracked solder joints on the controller circuit board. They are providing a special warranty coverage but, only if you have been experiancing the wiper problem. Its good only within 7 years of your truck being placed into service or 70,000 miles(112,600 km)! This goes untill Feb 29 2004. Chevy Assistance center # 1800-222-1020 or for the hearing impaired #1800-833-2438. I hope this will help some of the visiters to this site. I own a 68 Conv and am loyal to my bow ties. I know there are others out there the same. I have had this ongoing problem with my truck and thought I would share. I have yet to get it fixed so I am not responsable if they dont respond.

HwyStarJoe Apr 9th, 03, 06:39 AM That's not the only problem those trucks have. The upper ball joints fail prematurely also. I know.... I just replaced mine because GM just picked a VIN designation at random to Recall, the rest have to fail before they'll fix 'em. Just like the wipers.
I just use Rain-X and when the wipers stop working in the rain, I don't worry about it.

cambird68 Apr 9th, 03, 12:00 PM Brichead, I'll take a look at the points. I have had mine out several times and too thought it was the contacts. I cut a piece of cardboard the shape of the plastic cover and screwed it to the inside, between the cover and board. I thought that the contacts wernt seating far enough in. Once i put the cardboard in the darn thing started working, Of course it wasnt raining at the time. Thats when it will happen again and I'll be right in the middel of a traffic jam, late for work! LOL! I just thought I would let the folks know what they can do to get it fixed at the dealer. Most of us would rather tinker with it but, hey if the General's going to do the wrenching, I'll save the knuckels for the Camaro!!!! :D
Ledfoot Apr 10th, 03, 11:55 AM I wonder why Chevrolet stopped at the 97 model year. We have several 99 2500 series pick up trucks in our fleet at work and all of them needed the circuit board replaced as well as 2 98 astro vans. My personal 98 K1500 pick up also had the circuit board crap out as well. I may call them and see if they will do anything about it. Thanks for the info.

cambird68 Apr 10th, 03, 04:41 PM I dont know why they specified the years but Chevy sent the letter to my brother's address. I am in the military and have my plates registered through his address. So they may cover more years even if my letter hadn't mentioned it. I tried the # and it led me to the voice that stated the exact problem as one of the choices. I havent had time to get it fixed but will soon.
PDQUICK Apr 11th, 03, 04:57 AM That's funny, I just had my Blazer's pulse module replaced last Friday!
The wife started complaining that the wipers were becoming intermittent and 3 days later the service campaign letter showed up!
Now if only they would warranty the rest of the stuff that's gone wrong with this POS truck!!
Jonesy Apr 11th, 03, 05:38 AM Thanks for posting that info, I just fixed mine yeasterday!! graemlins/thumbsup.gif
HwyStarJoe Apr 11th, 03, 05:58 AM Hey PDQ and others,
Why don't we start a "Disgruntled Blazer/Jimmy Owners Support Group"?
We can have our own version of the '12-Step' program.....
1. Replace brake shoes/pads and drums/rotors annually
2. Replace or repair transmission/transaxles annually
3. Replace or repair various electrical systems annually
4. Reweld front seats to frames annually
5. Fill gas tank daily
6. Ignore constant and numerous rattles that will never be found
7. Watch for suspicious oil leaks under front bumper
8. Replace oil lines to filter after cleaning up oil puddle in driveway
9. Replace upper ball joints whether GM says to or not.
10. Do not use vehicle for long trips unless you posess an up-to-date AAA+ membership
11. Spend the extra money on an extended warranty until vehicle is no longer usefull
12. Vow to never again purchase a late-90's GM Blazer/Jimmy
PDQUICK Apr 11th, 03, 10:57 AM Wow!!! I've had every damn one of the problems you listed but, I only had to replace my transmission once at 97K miles for a planetary gearset "hard failure". I made up for that by doing all the oil lines twice!! My wife drives this thing, it is never ever beaten, meticulously maintained and I run synthetic fluids in everything!!
You forgot a couple problems:
Lower ball joints are as bad as the uppers.
You have to keep putting $125ea Michelins on every 45K miles or it rides like it's gonna flip over.
All the plastic in the interior fades to a different color and/or breaks.
Have to completely replace the original audio system to get rid of the Delco harmonic distortion unit!!

I guess were going to be looking the other way now that I have heard some of your problems. Hate to say it but, this is why a lot of people have gone rice! I still havent though. Thanks for the info. :D
Mike67RS Apr 11th, 03, 04:20 PM Dont forget about the coolant leak from the intake manifold.
brichead Apr 12th, 03, 05:18 AM WOW! Maybe i shouldn't have just bought the 99 Suburban? (So far, so good)
Here's a link to the web-site where I found the wiper fix.
#1 Son's Suburban Page (http://subtopics.freeyellow.com/subtopics.htm)
You can find an answer to any of your problems in the forum section,(if you look long enough). It's a great site!
Click on "Back to Current Forum" to get to the message board.

kurt6325 Apr 12th, 03, 05:45 AM That looks to be a very informative site for SUV's. It also looks to be the king of the "popup ad" sites. smile.gif
