Can someone tell me what this wire goes to? ( 69 396 no A\C ) Under the hood on the drivers side or the fire wall there are two boxes where the wiring harnesses start. Standing in front of the car the wiring harness on the left has a tan wire in it and when it exits the harness about half way across the firewall it has what looks like a cloth looking protective shield around it and a plug connector on the end. The wire is pretty good size by the way. Thanks in advance.

Guessing at Idle Stop Solenoid (only a off-the-top-of-my-head). That wire would have 12 volts on it with key on, 0 volts with key off.

John with a heavy guage wire and cloth, would that be necessary for idle stop solenoid? Also, I wonder about a temp sensor or oil pressure that is near a manifold, needing the protector covering material but wouldnt need the heavy guage either?
The large guage wire makes me wonder but I dont have a 396 so just throwing out ideas.

Just taking a stab. No schematics with me. The 2 boxes he referred to are the harness connectors. The left (inside) one is the engine harness while the right one is the forward lamp harness. Chevy used tan for a color on the brake warning switch but believe it comes out of forward lamp harness. Oil sender wire is blue, temp sender is green. Am I correct on those? GM tended to use the same colors for the same purpose.

Check the other post in this section (69 Wiring Diagram). If you don't have a wiring diagram, now you do graemlins/thumbsup.gif
