: Ex-coworker buddy got burned
travis Apr 20th, 04, 10:52 PM I got a chance today to talk to some of the guys I used to work with (they all moved to Atlanta with the job). Out of 15 or so that moved, almost if not all are getting a layoff notice next week. And one of my buddies who was 3 days short of having 5 years with the company (in otherwords, he couldn't bump into a job) ened up getting sweet talked into taking a management position with the company, also in Atlanta. When he took the job, he was told it was going to be a T3 tech support position (pretty cool job in my line of work) but it is management by title...that way you are not union but you don't manage anybody either. Anyway, this buddy was pretty stoked about this management position...it was an immediate 10% raise, and he got his own office. I was seriously thinking of taking the other opening for that position, but finally decided not to. Anyway, he started last monday...and put his 2 weeks notice in last friday. The job they had him doing was without a doubt one of the worst management jobs you could get. When he questioned them about why he wasn't doing what they told him he would be doing, they said "we just told you that to get you in here". WTF???? He got no severence package since he "upgraded" to management, and now will get nothing for quiting, and his moving expenses was out of his pocket since he was now management. He had originally wanted to stay here in Tulsa, but couldn't turn down the offer they gave him...especially with the job market being as bad as it is around here. Crap like this makes me so glad I ain't there no more
Everett#2390 Apr 21st, 04, 12:21 AM I see what you're saying. It is a nasty event to happen, but, there's alway a silver lining around every cloud.
The good Lord always has a plan. This could be his big break somewhere else. At least, he's in Atlanta. Bigger selection of opportunities.
pdq67 Apr 21st, 04, 01:05 AM I know of several guy's that "transferred" internally like 1,500 miles away and within a year were gone!!
It is a way of making sure you can't bother them b/c you are physically out of the picture.
You take a bunch of guy's that know how something works and there is always the possibility they may form their own company that is in direct competition to the old one, but if they get moved 1500 miles away and are practically broke, no way!! It almost worked on me but I came back home from IN before they could shuffle me around..
There have been two instances here in town where companies have been formed that were in direct competiton with the old ones b/c either the guy's were terminated or retired!!
One, an "Insurance Company" and the other a "Tram/Taxi Company" and both are pretty successful too!

and his moving expenses was out of his pocket since he was now management. Well the good news (if there could be any) is that the "Non-Reoccuring Costs" (such as the Moving Co. Bill, Temp. Housing, Closing Costs on the New Home & etc...) are Tax Deductible!
If they occured last year he can file an ammended return and get it back, if it's this year he will file it with his next return.
His relocation costs to his "New" Job and location will be deductible also - as will any costs associated with 'retraining' for his new job.
His tax guy should know all this and be able to help him recover some of the costs involved.
His personal 'shrink' will help get over getting dumped-on...
Congrates on not getting sucked-into this "deal" yourself.
No offense to any company - but, the last several deals I've heard offered to friends and co-workers for 'relocation to a better job' - didn't sound good at all, except for the company...
Wish him the best for me;
John
Scoop69RS-SS Apr 21st, 04, 08:15 AM There are regulations on how to move people out of a company, aka layoffs. I have always assumed them to be federal but I've never really given it much thought. I'll take a stab at it and now guess them as to be state. Based on this assumption.
A company cannot move a resource pool from one state to another with the goal of taking advantage of a previous layoff notification to another state. These actions by a company may meet the letter of the law however it does not meet the intent of the law AND it directly implies duplicity.
If the time lines are acurate, the headcount is high enough, a lawyer would have a field day with this. At the minimum, I would call the labor board and ask them.
Your pals job description is based on guidelines (federal job classifications) generally accepted across all industry. Here again, if there was DUPLICITY, your buddy can invest in a lawyer to help find his "package."
Again, labor boards, A.G.s are one of the few groups in the world that actually look out for you. They are the champions for the little guys.
Rick.

travis Apr 23rd, 04, 04:14 AM I don't know her personally, but did know she worked across the street in the co. She was the sister of another woman that was in my office that took the previous round of VTP. I know all my ex-coworkers that moved to Atlanta are getting their layoff notices on next tuesday...its going to be another big, deep cut.
fscope Apr 24th, 04, 05:23 PM I'm in the White Plains, NY office, and they talked 5 of my friends into taking a management position. They kept trying to talk me into it, but I won't do it. Rumor is we're going to lose 16 techs, and I'm 8 from the bottom. I guess I'll have to wait till Tuesday to see what happens.
