: 69 taillight harness
Phil737 Jul 18th, 01, 04:19 PM I just installed a Classic Industries replacement taillight wiring harness in my 69 standard Camaro. The outer bulb sockets are the dual-filament type (1157 bulb) and the backup and inner taillight sockets are single-filament type (1156). When I turn on my taillights, the inner two are much brighter than the outer two lamps. Brake/turn signals only light the outer lamps, which are then about equal intensity to the inner lamps. Everything I read says all taillamps are 1157s, but the inner sockets are made for a single contact. What am I doing wrong here?
mccorry Jul 18th, 01, 04:32 PM Sounds like the wrong filiment is being lit in the inner sockets. Can you turn the bulb 180 degrees in the socket?

Black69 Jul 18th, 01, 06:53 PM I'll check tomorrow on the bulb number that you need. The bulb itself has a base the same as the 1156 but the glass portion is smaller.
Mark C Jul 19th, 01, 01:46 AM My 69 (RS) has three wire connections on both the inner and outer sockets. I assume one is the ground, one is the parking light circuit and one is the brake/blinker circuit (outer one only has the blinker) Each socket carries an 1157 dual filament bulb with 2 terminals at the bottom. The center (reverse) is a single element 1156.
As a side note I looked at the rear section wiring diagram in the Assembly manual (UPC 12-D4) which shows the inner and backup light sockets as being single wire connections and the outer being dual wire connection for the brake/turn signal and parking lamp. The drawing also indicates that convertibles have rear interior corner lamps, which they don't. The drawing was last revised on 5/28/68 with the following note "redrawn without changes". Looks like there is a 68 wiring diagram in the 69 assembly manual.

KevinW Jul 19th, 01, 06:22 AM Hope I'm not stating the obvious.
I don't know about the numbers of the lamps, but on a standard 69, the outer should have 2 filaments, park and turn/brake, the inner should have the same intensity as the park and only 1 filament. On the RS both inner and outer have the 2 filament bulbs.
I remember past posts with this problem and I think the new 1156s were manufactured with the wrong intensity. There might be a different number replacement bulb, I have to do a search now. Kevin

Use a 97 bulb is the answer. K

Gary Dorion Jul 19th, 01, 07:06 PM Black69 helped me out on this. I had the exact same problem and the answer is to use the same base as the 1156, but a smaller bulb top. I think the bulb # was 89. I'll check mine and let you know.
My thanks again to Black69 http://www.camaros.net/forum/smile.gif
Gary Dorion Jul 20th, 01, 04:35 AM The # for the smaller bulb is 67. You will find that your problem will be gone http://www.camaros.net/forum/biggrin.gif
Good Luck!
KevinW Jul 20th, 01, 08:33 AM Just got back from the parts store. The new 1156 is definatly a higher intensity (says for turn signals right on the box). There were a bunch of lower numbers that the bases looked like the would fit, 89, 93, etc. There is probably a difference in the intensity between number (of course, they don't list that type of helpful info on the package). Try the ones suggested. Kevin

Gary Dorion Jul 21st, 01, 05:02 AM As I stated, in non-RS cars, the inner bulbs if too bright needs to be replaced with #67.
It has the same base, but will put out alittle less light. All the lights will have the same illumination.
