When I drive my 68 camaro, sometimes when it is idling it shut off and I cannot start it for about 5 minutes or sometimes longer and then it runs good for a little while. It is sporatic and shuts down at different times but it is only when it is idling. I know it is an electrical problem because when it shuts down I have no spark. I have an MSD box could this be the problem? COuld it be the starter?

Thanks for the help!

Very well could be heat.

Next time it quits, swap out the MSD box with the two purple jumpers supplied with the unit and see if it starts up right away.

If you have the box mounted in the engine compartment, there is a lotta heat generated, especially with headers. Usually, the box is mounted on the firewall directly overhead of the exhaust header. I mounted mine inside on the pass floorboard and ran the cable thru and hooked it up.

But then it broke, so I don't run it anymore.

Are MSD boxes known for breaking. Mine is mounted on the wheel well of the driver's side. How do you bypass MSD box?

Thanks.

I had a similar problem with the Pertronix. My wiring is old/bad and I was getting marginal voltage to the coil (4V w/ neg side grounded). The Pertronix wants about 8V, but will run with less until it gets hot. May be the same with the MSD. laabs

I had the same problem with a MSD 6A box. I sent it to MSD to fix, and they said it was working fine. I then bought the Holley Anaihlator system, and gave the MSD box to a friend. Now, my car runs fine, and his wont start! Ha!

I checked yesterday to see if I could see anything and I noticed the two small wires coming out of the starter were brittle and had some cracks in the insulation. They were tie wrapped to the starter to keep them away from the headers. Could this also be the problem why it shuts down? Thanks.

If you have points, Msd had you to connect their box across the coil after adding two connection blocks to both primary sides of the coil. Disconnect the harness from the MSD box and jumper across both terminals with the supplied jumpers, rendering the orig point system operational.

If HEI, disconnect MSD totally and supply 12 volts to HEI and see if spark arrives. If not, then HEI module is toast, get teo modules, one for the dist, one for the glove box when you're on the side of the road.

Take all the wires and terminals you see, loosen them, clean them and reasseble from where removed. Never hurts to have clean connections.
