'68 327 rebuilt in '97-installed in '69 coupe. I purchased car 6/01. Removed intake/carb (stock intake + rochester MV4) Installed Edelbrock performer intake + 600cfm carb on 7/10/01... Got linkage extension kits 2 days later, as Nobody tells you that sort of thing. Anyway, installed parts w/ much care, got carb tuned and engine purring. Opened her up a LITTLE BIT... secondaries kicked in and pop pop pop. Shut off engine immediately. under v-cover on passenger side, found 2ndrocker arm sideways and a curved pushrod. Tried to yank it out to no avail. Started removing intake bolts, and found that some were longer than others... Is this normall?If so, could longer bolts in wrong spot have caused this? What do I do?

Yes, too long a bolt in the wrong position can contact a pushrod. You can see them with the valve cover off.
Carefully check the valve springs, if one breaks it can allow the valve to float at a low rpm and the rocker can flip off sometimes bending the pushrod.

In several positions, an intake bolt longer than 1-1/4" (from end to bottom of head) will hit pushrods. Also pays to use thread sealer on all but the four corner bolts - 8 of the 12 bolts extend into the lifter valley, and hot oil mist can work its way up the threads and appear as oil stains at the manifold bolt heads.

ewwgg...that brings back some painful memories!
We had to do a total rebuild on the 327 in my Dad's 61 Vette. He lost a screw from the points when he was doing a tune up and putting another carb on. He just prayed that it fell back behind the engine and not into the carb mount on the intake.
On the road heard that pop pop pop...
When we pulled it apart we found two bent push rods and a cracked piston. Ooopps...I guess that screw DID go into the carb, LOL And my Dad has been working on cars for 40 years, it's the first time he pulled that one! OH, and I might add that this was the year he got glasses (after the incident)
The heads were fine, block was fine along with everything else. We just had to replace that pistion and all the push rods.
