View Full Version : Coil suggestions?

I just got a MSD 6AL from Santa. I'm looking to replace the coil as well, and wanted to know if there were any opinons on which coil to buy. I've had friends tell me that a blaster II eats spark plugs. I've also been told that Jacobs makes a pretty reliable coil. I know nothing about them and would like some input.

Thanks,
Ryan

The last MSD I installed suggested coils in the MSD manual. I am using an Accel Super Coil. I think you will also need to add some gap to your plugs with the MSD and the new coil. I've had no problems with the super coil.

68.camaro - how much gap do you suggest? I'm currently at .035. Also, I'm running a Mallory HEI Distributor. Do see any problem with that?

Thanks

I have been using an Accel Super coil and have put 50,000 miles on it with no trouble. I am going to step up to the Hypertech coil kit because it puts out more voltage than the Accel, and mines just plain old( bought it in 98). The Hypertech costs a bit more, but it puts out around 53,000 to 55,000 volts I think, where the Accel coil puts out 42,000 to 45,000. Jacobs is a good brand too, but I believe their coils most often come with a MSD type computer more often than not. I would get on their website or call to find out compatability between your MSD and whatever products of theirs you wish to use. I would open your gap up to 45 to see what that does for you, but jacobs says you can open up as wide as 60 to 65 I think (couldnt find the catalog).

I think .035 is too small. You should be running at least .045 with the MSD and HEI. And you will probably get a little more from .048-.052 if you are running a Hi Perf coil, MSD 6AL, and HEI. Too much gap will burn the plugs out quicker, so by the law of deminishing return I would run .045 to a max of .050. I run .050 on my HEI setup.

I am rethinking my answer. I think there were some Olds out there that ran an HEI setup, like a mid 80's car, with a gap like .065 or .085. I can't remember or find it right now. Can someone else verify my thought?? I'll keep looking.

I run the MSD SS coil. Its about the size of a tennis ball and it works fine. Read the info from MSD. There is a ballpark plug gap recommendation in it.

I'm running the 6AL setup w/ Blaster 2 coil on my car and have been for the last 10 - 15K miles. The coil died this morning in the middle of a busy intersection while on my way to work. The coil has less than 20K miles on it. I bought another one but am thinking about looking for a better one before I open the package. I don't know if this is a common problem or a freak incident. Can't say much about the plug-eating rumor. I change mine every several thousand miles or so.

The 6AL and the blaster 2 coil are a good combo. The MSD pro power coil would be too much and would really eat some plugs on a daily driver. Gap at .045

Thanks everyone for the responses and input. I think I'll go with the Blaster II.
