i am getting ready to rewire my camaro and i am thinkin about using painless performance harness #20102 for 69-74 gm cars. has anyone else here used this harness? do i need to buy any additional harnesses form a resto-parts place like npd or classic industries? i would imagine id have to buy a seperate harness for things like cowl induction or console gauges.

Painless harnesses are for basic stuff like head lights, ignition, heater fan, wiper, etc. Anything else requires additional wiring. Most of them are far from painless to install as you need to keep all the connectors for the end devices like the lights, radio, wiper, etc. and splice them into the painless wiring.

If your going for a stock restoration, or don't want to do a whole bunch of custom work stick with something like M&H repro harnesses.

I second Mark C's advice! I went with the Painless 18 circut for 69 74 GM muscle cars and it was anything but painless. Dont get me wrong it is a very high quality harness but like stated you need to save all your connectors and have access to a GM connector set. I did that and only had to splice a few old lights in (dash & cigerette). It is nice having the extra circuts though As I built a pro-tourer with lots of extra electrical Items, like a electric fan, fuel injection, power seat, and in the future power windows. If you go pianless make sure you keep your old harness for connectors and such. Also plan on spending a few days to do it. It took us about 2 weeks working in the evenings for 4-6 hours each night, but we soldered and heat shrank all the connections and had to test each circut be for sealing it. It is also nice using modern fuses. If you plan on a restoration than go stock it is easier and faster. Another place to look is American Auto Wire as they are supposed to be comming out with a 18 circut modern wire harness with all the connectors installed.

I am not familiar with the Painless kits. I am in the process of installing a Classic Update Series for a 68 Camaro from Factory Fit. So far it's been good. The instructions are clear and the harnesses are designed for our cars. There is a lot of options available for gauges and accessories. The downside is you will have to cut to length the wiring and install terminals. As I mentioned I can't compare to Painless.

the painless direct fit harness #20101 for 67-68 camaro and firebird is supposed to have the connectors and stuff with them aren't they? I know the universal harness isn't going to have the right connectors on it, but i think the direct fit would. I emailed painless about it.

HAve you lookled into M&H wiring harnesses? They are factory fit with all the connectors unlike the painful harness.

I installed the Painless 67-68 harness in my 67 and it doesn't include all of the connectors. As I remember, I had to find connectors for the tail lights. It is a good quality harness and goes in fairly easy. It also uses individaul connectors for the ignition switch which turned into a pain.
