Having trouble identifying some wires on my new engine harness, the longest is orange with female spade & rubber boot. Then there are 2 together, one purple & one slightly smaller gauge yellow , both with eye terminals. I have'nt been able to find a good schematic with color codes, thanks, Mike.

The purple and yellow ones sound like they go to your starter. The yellow one should run from the solenoid to the distributor, it provides 12 volts to the coil during starting, bypassing the coil resistor wire. The purple is the one that picks up the solenoid from the key switch.
Only wires I can think of that have female spade style terminals on it in the engine compartment is for the oil pressure idiot light, or the brake warning light on the proportioning valve. The brake one is a round terminal though, the oil pressure switch is a flat spade terminal.

Orange wire on my 67 is for the heater blower / fan. Yellow and Purple go to starter. Hope this helps.

The purple wire will go on the inboard terminal of the solenoid, the yellow on the outboard.
Pro-man is correct on the orange wire.
