I have a factory tach that I just got back after having it rebuilt. I think it was fried due to improper wiring by the previous owner. What color is the wire that runs to the negative side of the coil. It was hooked up with a yellow wire, but I think it is wrong. There is a brown wire coming off of the firewall that is cut. I don't want to fry another $130.00.

My 68 has a brown wire coming out of the fuse block that goes to the parking brake pedal assembly to activate the brake light in the dash.I also want to know which wire goes to the tach. in case I can send mine for repair.Good luck.

I figured it out. The tach neg. lead is dark brown. It is in the #1 position on the plug that connects to the back of the guage panel. (To the circuit board) The wire which runs to the neg coil is brown as well. Now, if I can just figure out what the yellow does that comes off the firewall.

The yellow wires under the dash go to either the radio or glove box light (positive) or the heater switch. Under hood side of firewall a aprox. 12 ga wire goes to the blower motor.

There is a yellow wire that goes to the starter. It's the starter bypass that bypasses the resistance wire in the harness for starting. It goes to the coil + terminal.
You don't need this wire if you have electronic ign.

Thanks David, I think that is it. I have noticed no problems with it disconnected. What does it do?
