After chasing the "pulating/flickering" light problem from ground straps to alternators I finally learned about the WELLS VR715 electronic voltage regulator from readingg the forums. It turns out that my Mallory optical distributor I installed must not like the old style regulator. (I still don't understand the relationship between the distributor and regulator)
Any way, my thanks to these forums and our helpful members graemlins/beers.gif

The old buzzer style regulators are pretty poor in terms of regulation. I'll throw out a number and say that they probably were no better than 5% regulation. They also didn't handle spikes well such as when the lights are turned on and off. Mallory ignition components (and others) are famous for failure from voltage spikes or over voltage. I presume the regulator you mentioned is a solid state design. It is most like giving you more like 1 or 2% regulation and handles the spikes much better.
