You have to use the fattest cable that you can find to run a trunk mounted battery. The drop accross the cables is proportional to the resistance/foot of the cable and the ammount of cranking current that your starter needs. Small gauge/diameter cables have high ohm/foot ratings. Bad connections will also have a high resistance and cause a lot of voltage drop. You might look for the "hot spot" in the system while cranking. The highest resistance spot will most likely get pretty hot when the engine cranks.

Use the largest cables you can get your hands on.

Use the best cable ends you can find and crimp or solder them securely to the cable per the manufacturers instructions.

Don't ground the battery to the rear frame and then pick up the block ground at the front subframe. Run a heavy gauge ground all the way to the engine block. Or, if this isn't practical makee sure that you have a huge ground strap from the subframe to the chassis to eliminate voltage drop across the bushings and small ground straps.

Good luck,
