View Full Version : Installing more gauges
MagnusRS68 Apr 3rd, 02, 11:49 AM Im going to install a tachometer, water temp and a oil preassure gauge.
And the instructions says that i should connect those to the ignition(key) but should't i connect them through the original gauges fuse terminal?
Or dont i need a fuse for those gauges?
Thanks
kurt6325 Apr 3rd, 02, 12:06 PM You need to buy the tach wiring harness for the tach. The oil pressure is a single tubing line and no wiring. The temp is a single green wire to the sender on the left side head and a pink 12v wire.
MagnusRS68 Apr 3rd, 02, 12:38 PM Hi
I forgot to mention that it is Autometer gauges, and they are electrical.
TOMSTV Apr 3rd, 02, 02:40 PM I just ran wires from the meters, to the senders, and the + pos lines i ran to a tap on the fuse box , that is "hot" when the key is on.As for the lights in the meters, i taped into one of the inside lights line.My car never had any meters,so i just hardwired them all in, didn't need a wire harness.Just keep the wires neat, and away from hot stuff.

MagnusRS68 Apr 3rd, 02, 11:32 PM Hi
So in theory, i can plug the new gauges + into the old gauges + in the fuse box. They are also off when the ignition key is off.
thanks
MagnusRS68 Apr 6th, 02, 12:00 PM I found a tap on the fusebox that said ignition and there was a cable running out from it back into the dash. Could i use that + for the tachometer? It gives juice when i turn on the ignition key.
TOMSTV Apr 6th, 02, 03:03 PM I think that would be fine.

That will work for sure. I used it on mine a short while BECAUSE the tach light will always be on, even during the daylight hours. I spliced my wire from one of the dash lights, I believe the ashtray one. Then again, I could be talking about one of the other wires. :-( (It's 1AM)
You can use the "ignition" one on your fuse box for switched power.
MagnusRS68 Apr 7th, 02, 12:59 AM Okey, thanks.
Btw, i took the black ground cable and screwec it with at bolt into the floorpanels, it should be ground there, or am i thinkng worng here?
TOMSTV Apr 7th, 02, 04:13 AM That should be a good ground.A good way to always check for a good ground is with a test light. put one end of the test light to the ground your using, and the other to a known "hot spot".If it lights up, you have a winner!

MagnusRS68 Apr 7th, 02, 04:32 AM Okey, that sounds like a good way to test it.
I tried the car with the tacho installed, and it works just fine, but the instrument lights dont work anymore, i changed the fuse and nothing? I hooked up the tachometer light to the lightbulbs in the translever console. Is it possible to short the lamp cables? It should not have any differnce if i put the red cable to the black or the other way around, because the buld can be inserted in two ways. But i didt hook the black cable to the red, but there was one grey and one black, so i hooked the red tacholamp wire to the grey console wire.
Tony Cisar Aug 3rd, 02, 09:58 AM Go ahead and hook the red tach wire to the grey wire. Grey is used as a switched wire, meaning when you turn your headlights on this wire will be 12v powered. Black is just a common ground.
