the gen light just came on today. I drove it for 2 hrs with it still on, and the car didn't die, so at least its at home now. It has the original alternator and regulator, which could be the trouble? I really dont want to replace both if i dont have to, so if anyone has any tips to tell which is bad i would really appreciate it. thanks.

John,
See if you are getting 14 volts at the alternator BAT terminal.
If not, it could be the brushes are worn out.
You can easily split the alternator and pull off the front half after removing the pulley with an impact wrench.
Leave the outer windings with the rear half of the case. Check the brushes and if they are worn out you should get a new set of brushes AND brush holder. Usually the brush holder gets worn and can allow the brushes to twist in it and cause bad contact even with new brushes.
There is a hole through the holder that you put a wire through to hold the brushes in place for reassembly. The wire sticks out the rear of the case and you can pull it out and release the brushes when the case half's are back together.
Or you can take it to a local rebuild shop and they can rebuild your unit for you.
It'd be nice to do the bearings too.

Hey John,
Here is how to check it,you need a volt meter as Dave said. Then get two male spade ends cimp them on a peace of 12/14 GA wire that is about 3 to 4 inches long. Unplug voltage reg, and start the engine. The plug off the reg will have 4 female spades, with engine running plug the wire we made in #1and#3,if the volt meter don't change, try pluging into #1/#3 starting on the other side of the reg plug.If there is still no change go with Dave and change the brushes. If there is a change replace reg.
Good Luck
Larry
