An ammeter must be connected in series. So you will have to disconnect a wire and feed that to one wire of the ammeter then feed the other wire of the ammeter to where you disconnected the first wire. The alternator wire that returns to the positive side of the battery might be a good place to connect the ammeter.

Is this a stock console mounted Ampmeter? Because the ampmeters used in the sock console mounted gauge set are millivolt meters not ampmeters. If you connect it in series with the alternator you will burn it up. The stock gauge gets connected to the terminal post on the radiator support in front of the battery and to the horn relay terminal with the big red wire on it going to the battery.

If its an aftermarket ampmeter, with a single scale (like 0 to 60 amps) then you need to wire it in series with the alternator output wire. If it has a positive and negative scale like 60-0-60 then you need to wire it in series with the red wire that runs from the battery to the horn relay. The wire size used to wire one of these type of ampmeter must at least equal the wire coming off the alternator now, usually 10 AWG. Make sure that when you run the wires thru the firewall it goes through a rubber bushing. If it shorts out you have no protection (unless you install a fusible link near the alternator) and you will have a fire under the dash or hood.
