The tach on my '67 is reading about 500RPM too high at idle and jumps about 1000RPM when I turn on my parking or headlights. Looks like a short of some kind. I've got a Mallory distributor and coil installed. Could they be causing the tach to read too high at idle? Why would the tach needle jump up when the lights are turned on?

check the center top screw on the dash carrier, that is where you get the ground for the dash carrier, make sure that the grounding stuff is there to give the carrier a ground to the dash. I bet that is whre your promblem is.
