View Full Version : Auto meter gauges
Polmanteer Apr 10th, 01, 09:29 PM I'm looking into getting the Auto Meter 69 Console Gauge Pod and after market electical gauges. I already have the stock gauges on the console but 2 don't work. I have feul, oil, temp, and amp. This is my first car so I don't know how easy the new gauges would be to install. Are all the stock gauges mechanical? Can I get all electrical gauges? If they are mechanical, what would it take to switch to electrical. Thanks for all the help.

TOMSTV Apr 11th, 01, 05:47 AM It's not that bad, each meter comes with all the stuff ya need to install. I used the electrical ones.

Polmanteer Apr 11th, 01, 11:38 AM Thanks for the pictures. They look really good. I going to order the pod this week. So all you gauges are electrical? Just wondering if I buy all 4 electical gauges they will work. Thanks for the info!
TOMSTV Apr 11th, 01, 01:18 PM Three are electrical, and the fourth is a vac gauge off the intake manifold.

Polmanteer Apr 11th, 01, 04:45 PM Tom,
do you know which factory gauges are mechanical? What did it take to hook up electrical gauges? In the summit magazine there is no mechanical fuel level gauges. If you got an electrical fuel level gauge do you have rewire all the way back to the sender or get a new sender? Thanks for your help

TOMSTV Apr 11th, 01, 06:31 PM Like i said the gauges come with the senders ,oil & water temp. The volts, just hooks into the wiring that is hot with the key on. So you only have to run three lines of wire for the gauges. Just run them neat and away from any moving parts.the water temp goes in tHe intake manifold and the oil pressure goes in just above the oil filter { on my 454}, and for the vac gauge i ran the hose to a tap in the intake manifold just behind the carb.Hope this helps http://www.camaros.net/forum/biggrin.gif
vtec Apr 11th, 01, 07:05 PM i just put all new auto meter phantom gauges in the dash of my 69. i decided to do major mods, to make the 5" speedo and tach fit. in the middle where it used to say camaro now rest a 2 1/16" volt meter and fuel gauge. over in the dash pad where the a/c should be i put in water temp. and oil pressure. it looks really killer( sorry no photos yet ).
the fuel and volt meter are electrical and easy too hook up. electric on everything else simpler but i feel that you get a more accurate reading out of mechanical gauges when it comes to things like water temp, oil pressure ect. ect. hope this helps?
Polmanteer Apr 11th, 01, 09:43 PM Thanks you guys that answers all my questions. Thanks for your patience Tom

Joe G Apr 11th, 01, 09:44 PM Hey Tom, nice ride! http://www.camaros.net/forum/biggrin.gif
I checked out your engine pix. Nice. http://www.camaros.net/forum/smile.gif
What kind of radiator, fan and shroud are you using? The shroud looks really big, compared to the one on my 69 396.

CA420 Apr 12th, 01, 05:10 AM Actually Auto Meter suggests the water sender be put in the head not the intake for a more accurate reading.

the radiator is a heavy duty 3 core. with the old 6 cyl. shroud.Had to use a mototool to mill it out, so that the fan would clear for the 454. http://www.camaros.net/forum/biggrin.gif
Tom.
Joe G Apr 12th, 01, 08:01 PM Thanks Tom. It sure looks good. Bet it works well too.
