View Full Version : Temp gauge
David Polmanteer Mar 25th, 01, 06:45 PM My temp gauge reads way past hot when the engine is not even close. The gauge needle moves way past hot always. The sender looks new, I just replaced the connection. What could be wrong? Do I need a new gauge. I have a 69 Camaro, crate 350, the temp gauge sender is located on the intake.

Mark C Mar 26th, 01, 04:28 AM Temperature sender should go in the drivers side head. Make sure you have the right one. All it is is a variable resistor that changes resistance as temperature changes. Does it go from cold to hot all of a sudden? If so, you have a temperature switch that should be used with an idiot light not a sender like a guage requires.
There are many different resistances available in temperature senders, check the model number, or just buy a new one.

bottledpower Mar 26th, 01, 06:41 AM most temp gauge systems get a variable ground from the sensor, if you short the wire to ground it will peg the guage.
David Polmanteer Mar 26th, 01, 11:01 AM I have the factory gauge.
Black69 Mar 27th, 01, 01:44 PM Some of you no doubt are using late model heads. I wondered how many of you run your temp. sending unit from the manifold and how accurate are they compared to placing them in the head?
dale68z Mar 29th, 01, 05:36 PM David,do you have an answer yet?Does the gauge ever read cool with the key on?

Polmanteer Mar 29th, 01, 05:43 PM After I move the needle with my finger it always goes back to far end of hot and when I turn the key off it stays. It always reads to the far end of hot. Could it be the gound? Where is it suppost to ground?

bottledpower Mar 30th, 01, 08:29 AM disconnect the sending unit and the guage should read cold, if it still reads hot you have a bad guage. another possibility is the wire to the sending unit is shorted somewhere between the guage and s.u., this will keep it hot also.
DjD Mar 30th, 01, 09:36 AM Are any of the other guages acting up? I had a bad ground to the guage's (main connection to the amp meter) and when the lights were turned on all the guages went to the opposite end they should have been at. I found it when I turned the dimmer down until the guage lights went out and the needles all went back to their correct positions.
Make sure you have the correct sender and that you have ground where and when you should...
