I purchased an AM-FM stereo (non multiplex) for my early production (Oct. 68) 69Z. Was stereo available in the early cars, or just AM-FM?

Stereo was an option. Stereo included a mulitplex unit that mounted above the glove box. These are very hard to find and very expensive when you do find one. I believe the stereo option also included the front kick panel speakers.

Just FYI, the 69 AM/FM radio was the only year that the cooling fins on the back were cut on an angle. This was done because of clearance issues, but it's a dead giveaway for identifying a 69.

Yes, stereo was available, but only in the Blue light multiplex version. There were three AM/FM's used in 69. The AM/FM mono, (U69) AM/FM blue light stereo,(U79) and the AM/FM Yellow light stereo. The Yellow light stereo is the only non multiplex stereo used in 69, and this was used in late 69's, somewhere around August and later. The Yellow light radion had the multiplex unit built into the head unit, so it did not require the external multiplexor mounted under the dash.

There are at least 2 different models of the multiplex unit depending on if you had an 8 track unit or not.

Can you give me codes to look for for the am-fm mono and am-fm yellow stereo?

My 69 AM/FM mono has a sticker that says "Product No. 7307321" The service model no. is torn away so I can't see that. The serial no. is 21FAH-1916. Hope this helps.

AM/FM is 91BPB1 (P/N 7307321)
AM/FM Stereo is 91BFM1 (P/N 7307331)
AM/FM Yellow light is 91BFM2

Numbers decode as:

9=model year (1969)
1= GM Division, Chevrolet, 2= Pontiac
A= A-Body Chassis, B= B body Chassis
PB= Pushbutton, F= AM/FM
B= Pushbutton (FM only), M= Multiplex
last number = release number

The multiplex unit is 91FMP11
The under dash multiplex is 91BMP21 (dealer installed only)
The under dash 8 track is 91BT411
The under dash multiplexed 8 track is 91BT421
The console mounted 8 track is 91FT221

There is another console mounted 8 track unit that is used with the multiplex system that I don't have the number of.

If you had the 91BPB1 radio you can make it "stereo" with the addition of the delear installed 91BMP21 multiplex unit with the controls. This is similar to the 67/68 multiplex unit. Of course you have to have a car without a console to use this unit. There is yet another multiplex unit that had 4 control knobs installed in the console storage compartment door for cars with consoles. Very rare unit, used in early 68 hardly ever seen.
