View Full Version : 69 Center Dash Fuel Gauge
gheatly Nov 29th, 01, 10:52 AM Does anyone know how to wire the optional center fuel gauge? I am adding one to my car and can't find the info in the assembly manual. There are no markings on the back of the gauge and it didn't come with any instructions. There are three poles sticking out of the back in a triangular formation.
KevinW Nov 29th, 01, 12:37 PM Does the back of the gauge look like the original plug would fit it (3 flat blades)?
I've never seen the back of the optional gauge.

gheatly Nov 29th, 01, 01:09 PM No, the center fuel gauge has three threaded inch long posts that stick out of the back. The spade connector will have to be cut off and the harness slightly modified to fit.
Mark C Nov 30th, 01, 03:32 AM The stock dash gauge has 3 stud on it as well. The connectors and shunt resistor are held on to the studs by 1/4"-20 nuts. Just pull (unbolt) the spade connectors and resistor off the original gauge, and install them onto the center console gauge, they should fit right over the studs. Then you can cut the harness connector off the wiring harness behind the dash and extend to the wires about 12-16" and reconnect them to the connector. If you really want to be correct you will have to run the tan wire from the sender, and power from the instrument circuit through the 16 pin connector at the front of the center console. You can pick up the ground for the gauge inside the console wiring harness. This way you can get the console out without having to cut wires.

kz1000ltd Nov 30th, 01, 11:17 AM Hey Gene, where did you find that gauge? I saw one listed on ebay not long ago for 700 dollars! I know it was a rare option, but not THAT rare http://www.camaros.net/forum/smile.gif

gheatly Dec 3rd, 01, 09:40 AM My car does not have a console and I am also not too worried about making the connection original. I just need to figure out which wires go on which pins. I'll check the back of the original gauge.
KZ - I bought the fuel gauge from Gary's Classics by my house. It is a Classic Industries repro and cost me $140. Gary had a clock dash that was broken in half and I was able to pull the gauge mounting hardware off of it. I figure the entire conversion will run about $200. However, I was lucky to find the mounting hardware without having to buy the dash it was attached to.

Mark C Dec 4th, 01, 06:26 AM For some reason I read console mounted fuel gauge instead of center dash mounted fuel gauge. Just pull the connector and spades off of your original fuel gauge, transfer the whole assembly to your center mounted gauge, and plug it back into the existins harness. You don't have to modify or cut the original harness at all.

gheatly Dec 5th, 01, 09:08 AM Mark, thanks for the info. I pulled my old fuel gauge out of the closet last nite (I installed a dash tach a few years ago), and you are right. There is a series of flat pieces that go together to form the terminal for the wiring harness plug. I'm REALLY glad I kept the old unit. I suspect that those parts are not available.
