On a 1987 Z28 with a 305, is there any type of low amps/volts protection. that would turn off the lights, radio, etc, when the amps/volts drop to a certain point? I posted earlier about a short, etc. and just had the charging system checked again, and the alternator was reading 13 volts and 2.4 amps. so should I keep looking for a short that could be pulling down the amps or just change the alternator? thanks

Some after market volt meters (LEDs) have a built in buzzer that activates when the voltage goes below 12V. I installed one on one of my Volvos and it perfectely works.
Just shop around.

Your alternator should show about 14.5 volts at the output terminal - I'd have it looked at again.
