I'm getting ready to put my '69 Pro-Street up for the winter. As this is the first winter I have owned it, I was wondering what precautions I should take. Some have said drain the radiator and block. Some say don't bother, due to the mild NC winters. It will be stored in an unheated garage and am running straight water. Thanks.

Eh- I would put anti freeze in it just in case. Cheap and easy.

Put antifreeze in it. Running just water is not good it causes the block to rust.

PUT straight anti freeze in and some staboll in the tank and you should be fine.

Be carefull using straight anti freeze. I read somewhere that if used undiluted it will freeze at almost the same temp as plain water. It is recommended to dilute with water per the instructions on the label for maximum protection.

YES, antifreeze for sure, Sta-Bil in the fuel system and remove the battery. Maybe even get it off the tires. Kevin

If you are worried about coolant system freezing don't use straight antifreeze. Straight antifreeze freezes at about -8 degrees Fahrenheit, a 50/50 mixture of antifreeze and water is good to -34 degrees Fahrenheit and a maximum concentration of 70 percent antifreeze and 30 percent water is good to -84 degrees. Water freezes at 32 degrees...

Assuming you are parking the car for the duration and you expext temps that can freeze water, at least remove your rad cap to allow the frozen water to expand if you don't want to be replacing core plugs in the spring. It would be better to run a 50/50 mix now and be set for the spring. Straight water is very corosive and boils at 212 degs where a 50/50 mix boils at 265 degs as well as inhibits corrosion.

With the cooling system out of the way I would change the oil, lube everything, add a fuel stablizer and fill the tank then run the engine by going for a last drive for about 20 minutes with the engine up to operating temps. This burns off the crud in the crankcase and gets the stabilized gas into the carb and the fresh oil coating the internal parts. I know a guy that collects 40's vintage cars and he blocks the fuel off and runs the carbs dry when he puts a car away. I don't think this is necessary if the stablized fuel has reached the carb...

Air up the tires, and detail the car inside and out like you were going to a show. If your storage area is moist but a box of baking soda in the trunk and in the interior of the car. Leave the windows cracked about a 1/2 inch. Disconnect the batt's pos terminal and cover the beast with a car cover. Your set for the winter and will be ready for spring fire-up.

One additional thing we Pacific NorthWesterners use to combat the moisture, I know RAIN in the evergreen state graemlins/clonk.gif

Dri-Z-Air dehumidification. It is truely amazing how much water this thing can pull from the air, even in my attached -heated garage. Bonus is it keeps any mold-mildew from developing. Insects seem to be attracted to the 'water' collected and they are taken care of.
Not very expensive and available at most hardware stores.
Nice product.

Hey 69, Maybe it'll blow your way and you can use it for some extra insulation. :D

By the way, don't try throwing any snowballs at me, they'll melt before they get here. tongue.gif
