View Full Version : YOU HAVE GOT TO SEE THIS AD!!!!
Gideon Jan 15th, 04, 08:58 AM Please take a minute to go to this link! It has to be a joke. I think this guy stored this car in the ocean. Its a steal at $3000!

DjD Jan 15th, 04, 10:18 AM Deleted your other posting of this and Joe's free to move this one to Bench Racing if he see's fit.
Don't see any big deal, It's a bit worked but if the seller is right about it being mostly surface rust it's a good start for someone that can do their own restoration...
jackr Jan 15th, 04, 10:23 AM Wow ! from the horror movie "When paint goes bad......." I have taken on stuff that bad or worse though.
HwyStarJoe Jan 15th, 04, 10:30 AM That things TOO UGLY to leave in Body Shop!! ;)
How could you possibly get any good metal from that, and have it acceptable to paint?? I would think it's a candidate for a complete body replacement. You can see rust-through in a bunch of spots. Jack, I thought I had some bad spots that might cause me problems after paint, but if you can bring something like this back from the Rust Dungeon without panel replacement, maybe there's hope for mine.
Rsmith1969 Jan 15th, 04, 10:43 AM The Shocks on the Passenger side Floorboard are less Rusty then the Car and they were under someones Car :D
Gideon Jan 15th, 04, 11:01 AM Way to pee on my little parade DjD.
Well, I don't know about your neck of the woods, but where I live, if you look around a little, you could get a running (albeit poorly) Camaro for that much, in much better shape than this one, which was obviously an advanced prototype that sank with the Titanic. Before this ad, I had no idea that vinyl could rust.
Did you expand the pictures? Yeah, its just surface rust- on top of the other rust.
Look at the picture of the engine compartment in the "all 11 photos" section for goodness' sake:

Waitaminute...DjD, is this your ad?
Oh well, all in fun. My buddy and I got a kick out of it, and the fact that originally the guy was asking $3500.
As someone who is always pushing others to get into classic Chevy restification, I sure hate to see guys trying to rip people who are just getting started, so rather than getting mad, I just laughed. I am always looking for Chevys in the Carolinas, and I wouldn't pay $750 for one that looked like that. Someone started doing body work on it, and then left it in the rain. I've seen that way too often. The quarters are shot, the fenders are a train wreck - both banged up and bondoed. The front valence panel is dented, so I suspect the bumper is pushed in and worthless. The channels around the glass are just bowls for the rain, so heaven help the trunk. The seam where the quarter and the roof meet is sticking out! The rocker panels are rusted through. The radiator support is bent up, and rusty. The interior trim is rusting! WHAT THE HECK ON THIS CAR IS WORTH ANYTHING? Maybe the crome around the radio, or the "Holler" emblem on the tail panel? And how about those cracked $350/pair-to-replace deluxe door panels? Sweet. All for a straight six. Sign me up.
DjD Jan 15th, 04, 11:18 AM Mike - You are the one that posted this in two forums and the wrong ones at that... I deleted one and the moderator from the other moved it here!! You act we stole candy from a baby!! Where have you been? There has been a ton of "can this be fixed topics" showing cars in a worse state of repair and for just as much lately. From what is available here on the left coast you need $5K to get into a rolling chassis and about $8K for something that moves under it's own power!! You'll get more support in bashing the seller over on the thread you posted on the chevelle site because they are not used to the same pricing for chevelles...
As I see it, you are the one peeing in the pool. All that the moderator and I did was try to keep the pool clean!!
Gideon Jan 15th, 04, 11:36 AM Hey man, like I said, it was all in fun.
I had already apologized on the other post for the double posting, but I was actually doing it because I realized it probably shouldn't have been in the body section. You moved my first post before I could delete it. I really wasn't trying to break any forum rules or anything, I just was trying to make everybody laugh, and your first post just seemed kind of flippant to me, that's all.
Nobody's accusing anybody of stealing candy...? and I assure you that I did not pee in the pool... I went to the men's room during the adult swim. By the way, that wasn't me on the Chevelle site. It was my buddy Mark.
In all seriousness, if you guys would really pay $5K for a rolling chassis, why don't you send us southeast hoodlums out looking for you? I know lots of guys who like to go hunting for them, and you'd save more than enough to take a trip to NC!
I hope there's no hard feelings!
ummgawa Jan 15th, 04, 12:02 PM Gideon
Some days they laugh and some days they don't.
Looks like a pile of rust in the shape of a 67 Camaro to me.
Good to see some new names, welcome.
Gideon Jan 15th, 04, 12:59 PM Thanks, ummgawa. I appreciate the welcome.

CFunK Jan 15th, 04, 03:00 PM How does a car get that much surface rust inside and out?
pdq67 Jan 15th, 04, 04:10 PM One way years ago was to park it close to your local high sulfur coal burning municipal power plant on a rainy day and leave the windows down and let acid rain get inside AND all over it several times over a period of time!!
Another way is sea salt spray like, I think was mentioned!!
Heck, A vinyl roof will draw moisture AND cause the roof and pillar sheet metal to rust through under it in not too many years!! How do I know??
pdq67
PS, I think high sulfur coal is almost a thing of the past but may be off here???
AND acid rain will take the paint right off a car in a heart-beat if it is severe enough!!!
Z10Joey Jan 15th, 04, 04:21 PM Nothing wrong with it. I believe that is the rare 67 color "Rusty Metal". It was an extremely rare GM color back in the late 60's, but you can see a lot more of them today! ;)
383 Jan 15th, 04, 07:27 PM Son of a b***h, I would be more interested in the bridge this guy has for sale!
Bob Jenkins Jan 15th, 04, 09:15 PM LOL.....I like this picture of his hound dog gaurding his new found treasue...

JWA Jan 15th, 04, 11:19 PM Have you camaro guys ever seen what street rodders drag home and bring back to life? With the prices of done cars now, the days of finding $1000 Camaros are all but gone. Sure some of us cheap B******s might still squeak out a deal here and there, but the majority of folks are not going to.
Don't forget if there is any car where replacement parts can be found it is the first gen Camaro. I bet the car sells close to the asking price. I hope it does. It helps the value of mine to keep going up so I can justify spending more money on it :D
Rsmith1969 Jan 15th, 04, 11:25 PM Along with the Rare Rusty Metal Paint it also has the really rare Bent Pipe External Heater Core which is very Handy when starting the Engine on cold days :D

Richz68 Jan 16th, 04, 01:15 AM Gideon,
I'm with ya on this one 4-sure! J-U-N-K especially at that price. Some guys seem to get caught up in the fact that older cars are tougher to find so they accept what these type of bozos ask for stuff.
As a guy who has been "misunderstood"... be careful having an opinion here. It seems if your not in the club or have the same sense of humor that your posts "may be monitored for quality purposes" tongue.gif
Have fun and don't change for anyone!
PS:
Do guys from the Carolinas still make pilgrimages up north to get motors for those clean Carolina bodies? I remember that was pretty common back about 15 years ago. While guys up here have always taken trips down there for shells.
Everett#2390 Jan 16th, 04, 02:19 AM I think the 62 Falcon and 66-67 Pontiac Lemans/GTO are in better shape. Don't knock the car too bad guys. My first race car started out this way, just as rusty, but, with foil tape with bondo covering same from the rear wheel opening to the rear panel, 6-cyl/PG and no trunk lid.
I worked on it, put in a Corvette L82 motor I bought for $65 USD, another P/G, Earl Scheib $139 USD paint job and the ten years I owned it, it returned to me $18K. then I sold it w/o eng/trans/tires/wheels for $200. Front windshield was in the back seat at sell time. I loved Beulah!

Gideon Jan 16th, 04, 05:10 AM Thanks for the advice ummgawa, I won't let them.
Rich: we do sometimes head up there for motors...more often though we just buy 'em there and have them shipped!
All: just to clarify, I wasn't saying it couldn't be restored. I am positive it can be. I was saying its waaaaaaaaaaaaay overpriced, which it undeniably is. I don't live that far from the seller, so I know. I don't see much of anything that can be used, and replacing all those panels will quickly add up.
If it isn't that bad a price on the west coast, well I pity you, but not too much because you have beautiful views, great weather, a huge auto aftermarket and gorgeous blondes to console you, you lucky "Illegitime".
Guys, make no mistake, my favorite car on earth is a first-gen Camaro, and if guys are getting three grand for piles of dooky like that, my 67 goes way up in value ...but the fact is, these cars are not that rare, at least not in South Carolina, where this guy is selling this car. I bought mine in North Carolina three years ago for $5500. It was probably the third Camaro I looked at. It had very little rust on the panels, the floors and trunk looked new and had never been replaced, the interior was deluxe and in better shape than most cars from the early 90's. It had a running small block and a bulletproof 350 tranny. I used it to commute 70+ miles each way for several months before doing any real work on it!
Now I may have gotten lucky, but my feeling is, that car in the ad would need easily $1500 in Goodmark repro sheet metal just to get started, let alone labor. It would be much better to start with a more solid car.
I wasn't trying to start a controversy, but read the ad and you will see that this guy is not trying to sell this to a seasoned restorer. He's trying to hook a newbie with delusions of grandeur. Lest we forget, that's the opening chapter of the tragic story of how someone new to our beloved hobby gets ripped off, then overwhelmed by the work and cost, gives up and buys a Civic with a fartcan bolted to the exhaust <shudder>.

LOL :D I agree Gideon.
On the price issue I think there's some demographics thing going on like real estate.
Where DjD lives (not his neighborhood per say) you can't touch a 3 bedroom house unless you have over a 1/4 million dollars. That's for a shack with a 1 car garage that needs paint & has the gutters hanging down and a dying palm tree in the backyard. But that's the Bay area and 1st gen rollers go high too. Everything goes high there. LOL smile.gif
For the same money you could have 10 acres with a 3/2 & 2 car garage with new gutters in the mid-west and maybe a fruit tree or 2. LOL :D You can also find 1st gen rollers alot cheaper it sounds like.
It's all relative. I guess it's what your used too & where your from on the pricing of alot of things. There does seem to be dramatic changes across the country which would be normal I guess.
My opinion? $3500 is way too much I wouldn't pay it. BUT, if I saw this car at the goodguy's show in pleasanton for sale I'm sure it would be gone that day and the buyer would be happy he found one.
Personally, I'm a cheap bastard, but that's just me. LOL :D
boodlefoof Jan 16th, 04, 06:23 AM Nothing a little POR-15 can't fix! ;)
rolling-robert Jan 16th, 04, 06:37 AM "I sure would love to make it yours, what can I do to make that happen?"
ehhmm, putting a gun to my head?
Codi Jan 16th, 04, 07:03 AM For 3K around my neck of the woods, it may be rusty but you can drive it home and it is very complete. When a console is rusted, one has to really wonder. Around here, that is a 1500.00 car and the five gallons of K2 are thrown in. tongue.gif
BartonekDragRacing Jan 16th, 04, 06:55 PM damn..I misread your post.. I thought you said he stored the Camaro in the ocean... so I wanted to see how it looked .. :/
cpodeep Jan 17th, 04, 02:12 AM Gideon, Codi
Next time you run across a 67 for 3k please send me an email. smile.gif
garfield Jan 17th, 04, 06:02 AM Hey..I'd like to see Jesse James take on that one :D
supv26 Jan 17th, 04, 11:13 AM Hehehehehe ought to put it on Hotrod show and see if that guy can buff it out!!!
 graemlins/clonk.gif
BT61 Jan 17th, 04, 02:35 PM I paid $5500 for my Camaro and it looked like this when I brought it home.
http://home.earthlink.net/~vintagetransam/images/69camaro.jpg
It's an X11, so no it's not a real Z. That's why I don't feel bad about building a TransAm car with it.
As far as the 67 is concerned, I guess I'd have to know what it weighed before I could put a value on it.
Wayne Jan 17th, 04, 03:18 PM I only live about 45 miles from this place I have never seen anything they had for sale reasonable, but I think I have figured out why the Camaro is priced this high there is $2900.00 hidden in the car some where. Just Kidding graemlins/clonk.gif
z28man Jan 19th, 04, 06:14 AM that car has been for sale on the collectorcartraderonline.com for over two years now , I saw it when he first put it on he started it out asking $3500.00 but has now lowered it to the more reasonable , $3000.00 , I can't say anything cause most of my cars looked about like that when I got them , it is a little much for it though I think ,,,,,,
Joe Harrison Jan 19th, 04, 04:11 PM After seeing all this click on my sig and tell me what you think my Camaro is worth in "your" neck of the woods. I bought it whan I lived in San Diego Ca. in 1997. It runs and drives excellent. The interior needs a headliner and package tray, also front and rear door panels. The dash is not cracked (Original GM dash). pasanger 1/4 needs replacement and it has around around the rear window. The trunk is good and drivers 1/4 repairable with lower patch panels.
After seeing this car and reading all the comments I would just like to hear what others think of mine, I live in a Camaro (hell any Muscle car) deprived area and I would like to hear what you think of it.
Thanks
Joe
U.S.RS/SS Jan 19th, 04, 06:31 PM Two 5 gallons buckets of bondo, 3 rolls of duct tape, The Sunday newspaper,1 fuel filter, some caulking, primer, paint, 1 trunk gasket, 3 new tires and it looks like 1 can of fix a flat. The head lights look fine.
