View Full Version : Custom Auto Sound radios, any feedback
laabs Jun 13th, 00, 12:51 PM I'm looking for a replacement for my broken AM radio. I'm thinking about a new CD receiver that I hide somewhere like the glove box or under the dash or a Custom Auto Sound radio. Conversions cost too much for what you get to me. Anybody used the custom auto sound radios? Anybody like how they hid their late model receiver? CarlC, I looked for the Kenwood KRC-3006, but they're all gone. Still considering the Krc-2008 shaft unit. Give me some good ideas. Steve Laabs
stevo camaro Jun 13th, 00, 06:48 PM Hi steve, I use a custom auto sound unit in the 67 RS. Have no problems with it. Sounds good, has RCA jack hookups for CD changer. It looks good in dash. The ONLY complaint I might have are the selection buttons. Like going from AM to FM, or the channel preset buttons, they're a little to small for my big fingers. http://www.camaros.net/forum/smile.gif I have a hard time selecting especially while driving. If were cruising the ol lady has to do it. I'm to busy rowing gears. http://www.camaros.net/forum/biggrin.gif

Radio Joe Jun 17th, 01, 08:08 PM I personally don't like custom autosound from my experiences, but i'm kinda biased http://www.camaros.net/forum/biggrin.gif
The KRC-3006 has been discontinued by Kenwood. the closest thing to that would be the KRC-1007 or the KRC-2007. both are very similar to the 3006, but no cd changer controls http://www.camaros.net/forum/frown.gif
I too build conversions, email me if you want a picture of a radio like yours converted with a hidden digital display http://www.camaros.net/forum/biggrin.gif
hideaway Jun 18th, 01, 01:05 AM a friend of mine just installed the one where everything is hid. and even has the remote and everything works great ,except the cd player skips really bad. even on flat smooth roads.he got it at a car show and i am pretty sure it is the auto sound set-up.good luck.
stevo camaro Jun 18th, 01, 06:03 PM Radio Joe, my sound isn't very crisp with the autosound. I thought it might be speakers but was told it's probably the head unit. I changed the speakers and there was no great improvement. I can tell a difference in clarity between FM and a cassette. The cassette actually sounds better than FM. I don't have a CD changer to it yet. It's pissing me off. I just can't seem to find the right combo the get the clear crisp sound most people have. Do you also think it's the head unit itself?
Oh yea, the amp I'm using is 12 years old. Would that affect the sound quality?

Radio Joe Jul 20th, 01, 01:23 AM Sorry, I haven't been here in awhile.
If your radio sounds better with a cassette then with FM, it could be the antenna. how is the signal? try another antenna (mabee lay it on the floor) if no better, it could be something internally in the radio.
I mentioned I didn't like Custom Autosound let me tell why. I haven't used them in about 2 years, so mabee their better now, but I always felt that their quality was poor. They actually sent us a display once to advertise their radios, and that was broke! Just bad experiences.
I said I was biased, thats cuz I build radios with 100% stock appearance but with modern internals and a hidden digital display. Anyone who is interested can E-mail me at joesclassiccarradio@yahoo.com

Batchman Jul 20th, 01, 09:59 AM Radio Joe:
Wish I held off on buying my new radio from Auto Sound about a week ago. Your radio looks perfect - just like the one I remember in my first '69 back in high school.
Just curious - does your's control a CD changer, how many watts, and how much?
Thanks
Radio Joe Jul 20th, 01, 02:11 PM Batchman (and others)
If you really want one of my radios and Custom Autosound wont let you return the one you got from them, I do take them as "trade-ins" towards one of my digital conversions.
contact me and we can discuss specifics.
I currently offer two models.
**Basic model: comes with a remote mount tape deck, 30 station presets, 60 watts(15x4 channels) and basic price is $550.00. display is available in green or amber. Sorry this radio wont control a cd changer.
**upgraded model: comes with a remote mount tapedeck, 30 station presets, 60 watts(15x4 channels)tuner call, loudness control, and will control a kenwood CD changer!!!basic price is $800.00 .display available in green or amber, CD changer NOT included.
All of our radios are handbuilt and require your stock radio to "convert" if you do not have a stock radio, a core charge will be added. All radios have a digital display that can be turned on/off to retain 100% stock appearance. We build them for just about anycar 1900-1975(and some others). custom work available.
Email me if you would like more info at joesclassiccarradio@yahoo.com
