Thinking of doing something a little different. Anyone know if there would be any problem with using the glue on "button" type rear view mirror in my '68? Any compatability problems with the old glass ant the glue/weight of the mirror? Anyone done this before? Thanks, Bret.

Should work fine. I like to glue the button on and leave it without the mirror on it it for at least 24 hours (they say you can put the mirror on right away).

If your talking about the rear view mirror brkt., sure you can. Ive glued 10s of thousands of them on. Clean the glass and sand the back of the bracket, spray some hardner on the brkt and the area on the glass and let dry for a sec., apply a thin line of glue down the center of the bracket, makeing sure that the glue is on the correct side of the bracket and stick it on the glass and hold in place for a min. If its all been done correctly, install the mirror and your ready to go.

Loctite makes the best glue kit that I tried.

Thanks for the responses guys. I've glued several mirrors back onto the windshield myself. The concern that I have is that the '68 wasn't designed with the mirror glued to the windshield, it's attached to the roof reinforcement panel. I want to know if there was a change to the way the laminated glass was made to accomodate having the rear view glued to it. Will there be a compatability problem with the glue or the weight of the mirror on the glass? Basically, I don't want to ruin my windshield by attaching the rear view to it since it wasn't originally designed for that. Thanks again.

It wont hurt a thing. Windshields are all the same(for the most part), they used to be thicker along time ago is all. Windshields also have to meet federal safety standards, that is why they are all the same, .30 thousands vinyl in them.

OK. I have done it. It will work fine. I also had to remove the original mirror bracket from the roof. My car didn't come with a headliner, so I don't know if you will need to replace it or not. The upper trim piece is notched for the mirror bracket, so this was also replaced with one from over the rear window, that isn't notched.
Good luck it is that kind of more modern subtle change that NOBODY will notice but is satisfying to know that you did.

Thanks Matt, I didn't even think about the trim. I think the headliner will be no problem though. If I remember right from the last time I replaced one, it had to be cut to fit the mirror-I just won't cut the next one! I'm thinking of using one of those rear views that have the map/reading light. Like you said, something different that hardly anyone would notice. Thanks again guys!
