I just bought a '69, and have to replace the dash pad. I need to know how to tell if it has A/c or not. There's no compressor in the engine bay, but I suspect it may have been taken off and the A/C decommisioned.
What do I look for on the inside??

Thanks!

Look for a center dash vent - those w/AC had 'em, those without didn't. Also check out the control panel - they're different for AC cars as well.

Thanks alot! I was 99.9% sure it didn't have air, but I wanted to be 100% sure.

Thanks alot!!!

Easiest way to tell is if there is a damper installed in the passenger side cowl under the windsheild wipers. Since a slot had to be cut in the top of the cowl right up to the edge of the firewall to install this damper it is not easy to remove. Other clues are a patch on the firewall since you can not fit an engine side standard heater duct over the A/C hole in the firewall as it is not wide enough to cover the hole. The holes in the firewall are different siz and shape for an A/C or non A/C car. There is an 1 1/2" circular hole in the firewall just above the passenger side head where the A/c wiring harness passed thru the firewall to. Also if you upper dash vents connect to the cowl through two 3" holes in the back edge of the firewall then the car didn't have A/C. The entire ductwork system under the dash is different on an A/C car, about the only thing that is the same is the defroster duct and the section right under the defroster duct, every other piece is different.
