MStarmer Apr 23rd, 01, 08:47 AM Here's a shot of autometer pro-comps in my '68. I haven't actually mounted them yet, they're just sitting in there for effect. I wanted to see what they looked like. I haven't figured out how they actually retain in there yet?... But they will look cool all the same.

If anyone has specifics on doing this conversion, especially about retaining the speedo and tach feel free to e-mail me direct.

130fe Apr 23rd, 01, 05:38 PM I just got back from the Memphis Super Chevy show this weekend. I was talking to a guy there with a nice black 67 BB RS/SS Camaro. He had the autometer gauge setup (dash) and he showed me his idea for turn signals. He mounted a LED in front of (top side of bezel) of each gauge. You can get them at Radio Shack for $2 each. The name of the part is "Built in resistor green LED assembly". You just drill a 9/32" hole in the bezel and in mounts right in. It has a pos and neg wire to run for power. It was a good idea and keeps them in good view when lit. I am going to put this in my auto meter set up.

rs1968ss May 21st, 02, 03:24 AM Bringing an old post back to life here but I just finished installing 5" Phantom gauges in my '68 and thought I would share. I used the original black trim ring to mount the gauges to the carrier. I snipped the gauge ring every couple of inches and then bent the tabs back to enlarge the opening enough to slide the gauges in. I then screwed the trin ring right back to the housing.I used 3 spacers since the ring will not fully seat against the housing. The I just used the normal Autometer brackets to secure the gauges against the trim ring. It fits great and took about 5 minutes. I bought some LED's from Radio Shack and drilled 1 hole in the top of each opening and them mounted the LED's straight down for blinkers. I took a few pictures and will post them here as soon as I get the chance.
Very easy install and they look great! Here is a mock up picture:

rs1968ss May 22nd, 02, 04:08 AM I replaced the console gauges with the Autometer's ($250) and my wife made the mistake of saying that the dash gauges didn't really match. http://www.camaros.net/forum/smile.gif
I finished it up last might. I still need to calibrate the speedo but all else is working. Very easy swap.

chevyboy68 May 22nd, 02, 05:51 PM Hey rs1968ss. How did you paint the guage housing. Alos, how did you reproduce the silver stripe??
rs1968ss May 23rd, 02, 03:32 AM Yes, I repainted the housing, semi-flat black. I used a silver paint pen from a local craft store to recreate the striping.

srobel May 24th, 02, 05:48 AM Randy,
That looks pretty nice. Nice enough that I am now conidering dumping my tic-toc-tac and speedwarning speedometer.
P.S., I am impressed that you were able to pull the gauges & housing out while the car was moving (22 mph in several pictures) http://www.camaros.net/forum/smile.gif

rs1968ss May 27th, 02, 03:28 PM Just got back from the Power Tour and have to say that I love the new gauges!
And yes it was a little more difficult swapping out the gauges at 22 mph. http://www.camaros.net/forum/wink.gif

rs1968ss May 28th, 02, 03:32 PM Thanks for the article. I mounted mine from the back instead of the front. When I dropped them in from the front they would not go all the way in. From behind they fit perfect. A quick trim of the original black bezel to allow the new gauges to slide throught the holes is all that was needed. I did not have to modify the Autometer brackets at all. If you look at the picture that I posted from behind you can see where I opened the holes up.

Winch Jul 19th, 02, 06:53 AM This is probably dumb but I guess there is no odometer with these gauges?
rs1968ss Jul 19th, 02, 08:12 AM There is one. It is digital and is right under the speedo needle center.

Randy, it almost looks like you've got green LEDs in the top of the openings. What is that?
-dnult
rs1968ss Jan 5th, 03, 12:44 PM Marc,
I used the factory harness. I just matched the old wires to the new meters. I replaced the mechanical speedo with an electrical one. There is a sender unit that connects to the tranny and then just wiring to the meter. It replaces the normal speedo cable.
Dnult,
Those are the blinker indicators. The new meters do not have signal indicators so I went to Radio Shack and bought a couple of small LED's. Then drilled a couple of holes in the top of the housing and mounted them.

jg95z28 Mar 14th, 04, 12:10 PM Does the sending unit come with the elec speedo or does that have to be purchased separate?
What did you do for a fuel gauge?
Lucky68 Mar 14th, 04, 01:38 PM Jeff, I'm doing the same gauge replacement. The sender unit is sold seprately which Autometer is pretty proud of (about 60 bucks). Jegs & summit both sell them. It's a nice set up though. Its programable so your speedometer is actually accurate. No need to replace the plastic gear in the tranny. For a fuel gauge I bought the autometer pod set-up for the factory consol that uses the ultralite or phantom gauges. If you don't have a consol, you can mount one under your dash.
jg95z28 Mar 14th, 04, 03:52 PM Thanks. I am considering going with the factory console guage set.
What does the autometer pod look like?
HeadHunter Mar 14th, 04, 04:04 PM The AutoMeter pod looks similiar to the stock unit. The differences are the guages are round, and they are angled slightly towards the driver.
Lucky68 Mar 14th, 04, 04:05 PM The pod setup is for the 68-69 factory console. I don't think they offer one for the 67 so I'm guessing you'd have to use a 68/69 console to install the gauges. I may be wrong, maybe someone else can chime in. Anyway, heres a link to autometers website with the gauge pod.
http://hp.autometer.com/products/mounting_solutions/console_pod_domestic/console_pod_domestic.html
jg95z28 Mar 15th, 04, 06:43 AM You're right, they are different for a 67. I guess the stock console guages are my best bet. Thanks.
