I have a standard light blue interior that is almost done, originally gold. I recently purchased a set of deluxe belts that looked blue in the ebay pic, but actually are a teal color, slightly darker and more green than I wanted  . I searched for dye posts, but none discussed dyeing a lighter color than what the belts were beforehand. Does anyone know if you can get a lighter color from a dye, such as RIT, or does anyone have a set of std blue belts? Thanks very much.

There are dye kits for the seatbelts in the catalogues. As for dying the darker colour to a lighter colour, would you consider bleaching them first? Just a suggestion I'm not sure if that would work.

Whoa Green Hornet!!!!! Good thinking! Maybe that was as obvious as ever, but I was stumped on how to dye these things lighter than they already were graemlins/clonk.gif . Anyone have anything else or know if bleach is damaging to the crucial webbing/stitching? Thanks!!

Well, I soaked a belt for five hours in bleach, and all it did was sanitize. Still the same teal, just clean and bright now... What can I do with these things?! Any help would be very very appreciated.

The fiber used in seat belt material is nylon. The method used to add color to the fiber can be either of two methods. Piece dyeing, such as Rit, is applied after the fiber is extruded. The other method is solution dyed where pigment is added to the molten polymer at the extrusion process. Given that bleach would not remove the color I'm guessing the material may be solution dyed. Let me do some research and I'll get back with you tomorrow.

My dyeing expert is on vacation this week and it will be Monday before I can ask him for a possible solution. In the meantime try the bleach by applying a small amount and allowing it to air dry. The bleaching process is facilitated by oxidation.

I talked with my dyeing expert. We don't know of a method for you to dye the belts a lighter color. If the bleach did not remove any of the color it is probable that the fiber is pigmented which is bleach resistant. More severe color removal methods would destroy the tensile properties of the fiber. Posibly you could dye the belts a darker color but on tone with the interior, a darker blue the same tone.

Thanks. I've considered dying them black, since my interior has black accents on console and dash. Oh well... graemlins/sad.gif
