View Full Version : Seat belt bolt -Rubber "boot"
dschribs Feb 18th, 04, 10:25 AM Hi All.
On the front belts, any one know how to remove the bolt on the transmission tunnel, on the belt without the retrator, without ripping up the rubber boot covering the bolt and bracket???
Can it be pried back to get a socket in there??
Seems like it might rip if I go that route..
Thanks!!

Unreal Feb 18th, 04, 12:32 PM Don't do that, you will rip it!!! It has a flap that fits under the metal anchor part of the belt.
What you want to do is grab the underside if the boot with one hand, and the exposed area of the belt with the other, and pull them apart. In effect pulling a big loop into the belt between the boot and the attaching bolt. With the slack from the loop, you will be able to get a wrench onto the head of the bolt.
I'm sure I did not explain that very well, but if you look at the opening on the underside of the boot, and pull slack into the belt, you will see what I mean.
It probably took me longer to try to explain, than it will take you to remove the bolts.
69X11SS Feb 19th, 04, 04:30 AM If the boot isn't too dry, you can get a socket in there once you pull some of the belt through. The boots from my car were gone when I got it. I found a pair in a salvage yard that were in good shape. Take your sweet time and don't try to over stretch the boot or you could tear it.
dschribs Feb 19th, 04, 04:53 AM Thanks
I'm thinking about heating it up a bit with a hair dryer before I give it a go...

69X11SS Feb 19th, 04, 11:47 AM The hair dryer method should work. Let us know how you do.
Gary L Feb 28th, 04, 05:55 PM Anyone know where to get the rubber boots for the seat belt ends? Does another model fit Camaros like Nova or Impala? Thanks for any leads.
Gary
KevinW Feb 29th, 04, 04:18 AM Gary, the rubber boots are a little different in how the mount, but the 66-72 look very close from the outside. What color do you need? I might have a few extras. Send a PM. Kevin
z28doug Feb 29th, 04, 07:08 AM Gary,
I pulled a couple of black ones off a 69 Impala yesterday and as Kevin said, they seem to be a little different. One thing I did notice is instead of two belts going through as in a Camaro with a shoulder belt, the Impala had three going throught it. (driver lap, center lap, driver shoulder)
Gary L Mar 17th, 04, 06:37 PM Does anyone have a picture of the end covers? I need to be able to identify them when I see them.
Gary
KevinW Mar 19th, 04, 12:39 PM Here are the 3 kinds I have. 69 is in the middle. PS to Gary, I was only able to find one real 69 and it is for my SS. I am now also on the hunt for 1 more this summer. smile.gif

Gary L Mar 19th, 04, 05:54 PM Thanks Kevin. Just what I needed. graemlins/thumbsup.gif I had no clue.

PDQUICK Mar 20th, 04, 02:10 AM Kevin, I have a late production '68 and the boots look just like your 69's. I don't know when they made the change, but I don't have the earlier boots.

Gary L Mar 20th, 04, 05:52 AM The tooling for this part must be outragious to build. One of the few in "demand parts" that is not repeo'd.
Gary
KevinW Mar 20th, 04, 07:41 AM The boot marked 68 and below actually have a peice of metal molded inside the vinyl. The metal tabs hook under the belt anchors.
Any one with a 67 Camaro with boots that have metal or like the 69 & 68 ones?
This is what basic research is all about! smile.gif
z28doug Mar 23rd, 04, 08:44 PM The boot on the right of Kevin W.'s picture looks identical to a pair I pulled off of a bench seat 69 Impala recently. Part # inside the boot reads 8769449.
KevinW Mar 24th, 04, 01:52 AM Since I have a LA build and a norwood build. That may be a difference.
My norwood car has the middle kind. The LA belts have been off so long, I forgot what they were.
Can someone check there LA car and see what kind of boot there is?
Doug, was the impala a LA car?
z28doug Mar 24th, 04, 08:42 AM Kevin,
My LA 69 has the cover as shown in your picture as 69.
The 69 Impala was an April 69 car and I think it was also an LA car. I glanced at the cowl tag for the build date but didn't pay much attention to where it was built.
Also remember the boot for the bench seat has three belts going through it not two, not sure if that makes a difference or not. There may have been a different design for one that would be used for three belts.
Gary L Mar 24th, 04, 05:18 PM Everyone is confused. Check these two auctions. I bought the ones with a snap because they were cheap, until I can find the correct ones.
