does anyone know when you have to replace fan switch if you have to remove dash pad to get to old switch? thanks

Yes remove dash pad to reveal the top screw of the controls. There are two screws on the front of the dash that hold the bottom of the controls. Should come out the back. Be careful of the cables so they don't kink and bend or break.
