Has anybody used a later style rear view mirror that is glued to the windshield in a 1st gen car?

PLEASE don't do it! There are many places you can get the proper setup.
I've had and seen many of the glued-on mirrors fall off in the summertime. This happens on new BMWs and Mercedes as well as Fords.
Nothing beats the original setup, IMHO.

I will be installing a 4th gen compass/temp style mirror in my 69 project.. you will have to machine modify the OEM bracked to remove the factory mirror mount and still retain your visor clips..

Check out the Year One 69 "Innovator" Camaro as they have a later style mirror installed on it smile.gif

Hey Steve2000SS,
I'm surprized at your statement, you being in Corona. Gets kinda hot in the summer there too, no?
Actually, I've been in the new and used car retail business for over a dozen years, so maybe I've just seen more cars.
One time I was at the auction in Riverside in July or August....really hot, and we were buying off-lease cars for the dealership. 2 cars out of the dozens we looked at had the mirrors fall off, not an uncommon sight. When we were done, I went back to the car I was driving, a Ford Explorer Sport demo, and found the mirror on the floor!
I'm not saying it happens everyday, but it does happen on the newer cars.

Sure.. i will buy that it happens but i dont think one should base having one or not on the off chance that it "might" fall off smile.gif

I personally love the stainless look of the OEM one but my car is a little more custom and with the dome light deleted I needed the map lights in the mirror..

Oh, and to correct my statement i do remember on coming off in my parents car when I was a kid.. but that was many moons ago. You would think they would have perfected the glue by now :D

They do fall off!!! I'v had to glue at least 5 different ones back on, one I even did twice!

You get a small kit from the auto parts store.

When I was in Florida my "glued on" mirror fell off a couple time using that glue that came with the mirror. I later tried ordinary household Superglue and didn't had any problems after that. The superglue does a great job on stone chips in the front window. It halps prevent the chip from turning into a crack. You can get windshields repaired, and I don't know if the superglue would interfear with the repair, but for an Alaska Cadillac (1980 Suburban rust bucket), who cares about a chip. As long as it doesn't get spider webs.

Im using a billet specialties mirror. Its been on 2 years now with the recomended 1 drop of glue. I used the loctite rearview mirror glue.

I'd be more worried about obstruction of view with mirror on w/shield. The view area through a 1st gen is small enough w/out adding another blind spot IMHO.
