View Full Version : Seats being re-done
Paul H. Aug 14th, 03, 04:44 AM I found a local interior shop in OKC to stretch, ring, and re-pad all the seats for $275.00. Does that that sound reasonable? The previous owner had put new seat covers on but did not re-pad or hog ring them so they look like crap now. I just hope this shop does good work...you never know. They're also going to install my headliner kit for $60. So you guys think this is a good deal? I'll post before and after picks when it's done. graemlins/beers.gif
sixtsevnssrs Aug 14th, 03, 05:04 AM I did mine myself, turned out to be pretty easy. Bought an exhaust system with the money I saved.
;)
angelglo Aug 14th, 03, 08:06 AM paul,
as 67rs said, it was pretty easy. all you need is a pair of hog ring pliers and hog rings.

stingr69 Aug 14th, 03, 08:50 AM I just picked my seats up from the trim shop. The first time I went to get them, the passenger side looked like crap. They showed me how the cover had been sewn together crooked. The houndstooth insert on the seat bottom was not the same width as the insert in the seat back either (PUI covers). I ended up re-installing the GM cover on that seat and it looks much better now. They charged $95 per seat and if I had been trying it myself for the first time, I would have been very frustrated. Worth every penny to have the seats done by pro's in my opinion. I do my own headliners but $60 is a good price for the job.

Paul H. Aug 14th, 03, 11:35 AM Thanks for the response Mark. I just wanted to be reassured that I'm not being over charged.
Thanks.
Joe Harrison Aug 14th, 03, 06:35 PM Not a bad deal if ask me. I bought some covers and foam padding of e-bay. I had a local shop in Camden do the work. I will be looking up Mark when the time comes to get them done again, the guy was an idiot. The padding was to thick and the seats look over stuffed except for the passanger seat bottom. He said he trimmed that one but the ohter would have take to much time and he would not have finished it that day. It cost $100.00 for both fronts and I got what I paid for a sorry a$$ job. The thing that burns me up is he did not bother to phone me and ask if he could have the car longer or say the foam was to thick. I guess his head was thicker. He said he fix them but would have to charge the same price.
Screw me once shame on you.
Screw me twice shame on me.
Moral to the story:
Ask them questions, the main one being what if you don't like the work they put into the seats or how they look (over stuffed, under stuffed, crooked seams, tears at the hindge or other sharp areas) What will they do? Are they proffesional enough to stop and call if something is wrong?
You get what you pay for.....I paid for an idiot, I knew the price was to good to be true.

Paul H. Aug 15th, 03, 12:06 PM My upholsterer called yesterday and had me come take a look at what was being used in my seats. The previous owner had used folded-up bath towels for seat cushion! graemlins/angry.gif The foam is desinigrated so he can't build them up....plus the springs (back & bottom) on the driver's seat are beyond repair. So needless to say, my costs on this project just went up a tiny bit.
On the positive side, he installed the headliner and looks awesome! graemlins/hurray.gif He went ahead and installed the visor supports, dome light, and sail-panels all for $65. I think that was worth $65.
kz1000ltd Aug 15th, 03, 01:40 PM 65 dollars for a headliner? That's a steal, it took a good 3-4 hours for the guy to do my car, and it cost me 140, but he did an excellent job, and he came over to my house to install it.
CFunK Aug 15th, 03, 08:38 PM A trim guy that makes house calls? Now that is WAY cool.
I agree $60 is a STEAL. I was quoted $90 and I had to leave the car for a few days.
I guess the approach I would take when recoving the seats is expect everything including the springs, foam and covers will need to be replaced. At least that is what is figured into my budget.
supv26 Dec 1st, 03, 03:27 PM I stopped by an upholstery shop today that I have used in the past. This place did the seats in my '68 Spitfire and my son's '67 chevy truck. I asked him how much he would charge for installing all the new material, bumpers, hardware for just my front seats. He estimated it at $40.00 per seat. I think that was a very reasonable price..
I will order the kits from NPD and it looks like the material and all the other parts will run around 214.00.
paulm Dec 1st, 03, 04:07 PM I had my 69 seats and 67 seats done for $45 a seat out here.
Unreal Dec 2nd, 03, 05:08 AM I paid $125 for both front buckets and the rear seat. I had disassembled the seats, and cleaned and painted everything. I supplied the buns, springs, and seat covers. He supplied new jute and burlap where necessary, and, of course the hog rings.
I asked him about the wire reinforcing in the burlap. He said it was not necessary, so I did not use it. If I had it to do over again, I would have bought piano wire at a hobby store, and duplicated the original, anyway. You only get one chance to do it right. What's a little extra effort......it is, after all a hobby!
69X11SS Dec 2nd, 03, 06:02 AM Dan, That is a great quote for your seats. Go for it. When I did mine I learned alot and gained some experience. It is not a hard job but it is time consuming. Unreal, I picked up some fine stiff wire at Ace Hardware (shameless plug) and duplicated the reinforced burlap. I replaced the springs, removed the rust from the seat frames, cleaned and lubed the seat tracks, painted the frames and used new foam in the project. I definately broke a sweat tugging and pulling on the vinyl. But, when I was finished I impressed myself.
