Hi All:
Anyone know the size of the two speakers that companies like Custom Auto Sound use with thier dual dash speaker upgrade?? I actually have one of thier dual dash speaker units in my car-in storage-and the speakers are shot. I wanted to simply buy two new speakers of the right size and swap them for the old speakers rather than buying the whole new unit again.
Thanks!!

I used 5 1/4" sony explode 3 way. I made my own fixture out of a piece of masonite. I saved the "rim" and rubber cushion of my old 4x10 and attached it to the new fixture. reapplied the cuhsion, and covered it with grill cloth. Now if you look through the windshield at the speaker opening, it looks like the original --you can't tell it's modern.

Two issues:
1. A/C duct was in the way. I cut a piece of masonite to fit the sort of triangular opening in the duct, to retain its shape. Then I SLOWLY heated the plastic with a torch until is was soft. Then I used a can which was slightly larger diameter as the speaker magnet, and "reformed" the duct, holding it in place until the plastic cooled.
2. The new speakers are much heavier than the original, so you need a new fastening scheme. I made a "P" shaped bracket that attached in the back on the original speaker bracket, but extended to the front of the dash. You could tack an attachment bracket on the inside of the dash, which the front of the bracket could slide into. But I picked up one of the little square openings in the dash front, and formed the bracket to hook over the bottom of the hole. I ground the "hook" to a taper, so that onece the dash pad was installed, it was covered, and did not interfere with the fitment of the dash pad.

Unreal makes a good point. If you are using the dual front speaker settup or a larger front speaker it is absolutely neccessary to add extra bracing to suuport it. The stock speaker is held by a small bracket welded to the firewall. If you put too much stress on it, it will break off. Anyone using this kind of settup should look into adding some more bracing before they need to re-weld the bracket to the firewall.

Steve,
My car is A/C. As described in my earlier post, I had to reshape the center vent duct a bit to make room for the speaker magnet on the driver side of the center vent. (the piece I'm talking about fits in the center vent area, adn has an outlet on the driver side that is triangular, and an outlet on the passenger side that is circular. I made an insert for the triangular side to maintain it's shape when I heated the plastic to reshape it.

BTW, the edges of my two speakers are less than an inch apart.
