View Full Version : Headrests 68 camaro
stope4 Nov 2nd, 02, 08:10 AM Hey guys, this is the most informative site I have seen regarding first gen camaros. Please keep the information flowing. My question is: Can anyone explain the difference between 68 buckets with headrests and 69 bukets with headrests. I've run across a pair of seats in a 68 camaro (houndstooth) in a boneyard that has headrests. The guy from the yard insists the seats are 68. I do not know how to tell for sure. Can someone help. Thanks in advance for your replys.
Dan Trafford Nov 2nd, 02, 10:28 AM My 68 Camaro has headrests with Hondstooth interior. I belive that there is difference between straight and bent headrest bars. The 68 Houndstooth seat covers have a smaller chrome emblem at the top center seat back, 69's have 6-7 buttons attached to the seat back. I don't remember seeing a part number on the headrest bars but let me know if you would like me to check them again.
Unreal Nov 2nd, 02, 10:41 AM 68 and early 69 headrest bars were straight. later 69s were bent.
seems like someone on this site said the houndstooth design was different between 68 and 69.

Here's a link to my home page that shows the major differences on the Headrests. I'll leave it up for a few weeks for people to copy...

MytMini Nov 2nd, 02, 12:42 PM Hey Ed thanks for the seat info. I was pretty sure the seats in my 68 were 69s, but with your information I was able to verify that they are and that they are the late style.
Thanks!

stope4 Nov 2nd, 02, 01:10 PM Hey Ed, great info. Now I know the difference. The seats I am looking at are for a 69. I thought it was too good to be true.
Jeff, my trim code is TR 712 - Standard black.

Depending on your plans and the price of the seats, you might want to pick them up, anyway. The frames are the same for the two years, and if you plan to put new buns and seat covers on them, They might be a good starting point. The plastic seat backs and knobs are the same for 68 and 69, too.
I completely redid mine before getting them reupholstered. (new buns, new seat springs, rust removed and painted) I figured, why take a chance on 30 year old seat springs, when new ones were only $50/ ea. The frames were not painted from the factory, which is why they are always rusty!
Dan Trafford Nov 3rd, 02, 11:06 AM Jeff, My trim tag reads 749. I belive that denotes Black Houndstooth. GM documentation (Canadian Car) lists AS2 as the option number for the headrests. Is this the info you were looking for?
stope4 Nov 7th, 02, 05:52 PM Hey Unreal, did you replace the 69 seat cushions with 68s?
stope4 Nov 9th, 02, 06:27 PM Unreal, any comments on my last post?
Unreal Nov 11th, 02, 10:08 AM Sorry, I was gone for a few days and this post dropped off the screen.
Anyway, I had 69 seats for a 69 car, so I bought new 69 buns (the seat back foam had the springs molded in) , 69 seat springs, and 69 seat covers. My point was that if you plan to put new seat foams, and new springs (which I highly recommend) then you could use the 68 seat frames, as they are identical to the 69s.
