What is the best way to put holes in the carpet for seat belt, seat, console, etc bolts? Any secrets for locating the holes?

I've had trouble with drills in the past as they tend to snag the carpet. And while my default will be to use a utility knife, I would think it would be hard to make nice holes.

I have always used a small phillips screw driver to locate the holes. After punching the guide hole, I use a bigger phillips to make the hole larger. Then I use the utility knife to cut a small "X" in the carpet. Finally, cut the triangles in the "X" off to get the hole size you need.

I have replaced the carpet in my 69 three times in the 12 years, the last time about 2 years ago. It still takes a good half a day to get the carpet positioned right and the holes positioned and cut.

Here is my tip of the day!!! I really can't take credit as I think I got it off this site about a year and a half ago!

Put the bolts in place under the carpet. Use an x-acto knife and cut a X in the carpet on the top of each bolt head.... Push the carpet down around the bolt head and leave the bolts in place until your ready to mount the belts or seats.

I was uneasy about making big cuts but it sure easier than poking around with an ice pick!!!

DjD,

Great tip!! I'll give that a try. Size of holes shouldn't be that critical as they are all covered up by something. Man I love this site!! gheatly....thanks also...and for the feedback on the seat belts.
